Castro Lover

Does anybody know why you can't say you like Fidel Castro in this country without being suspended and having officials saying you should be fired?

MIAMI — Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen has been suspended for five games because of his comments about Fidel Castro. He has again apologized and says he accepts the punishment.

The suspension by the team takes effect immediately. It was announced Tuesday, shortly before Guillen was to hold a news conference to explain his remarks, which caused an uproar in South Florida.

Guillen told Time magazine he loves Castro and respects the retired Cuban leader for staying in power so long. At least two local officials said Guillen should lose his job.

Because the team plays in Miami and a good portion of their fanbase is from Cuba and HATES Castro. The team has a brand new stadium and a much higher payroll and needs to attract fans not alienate them.

I know that Miami is the new Gaza settlements - occupied by wild-eyed fanatics who scream for blood at the drop of a hat.

But I just thought it might be worth pointing out that this is America.

Not to mention that Castro and his cold blooded murdering dog Che are the moral equivalent to Jeffrey Dahmer. He is the manager and hence the face of the baseball team. His is the face the fans see interviewed daily. The team is trying to sell a product. A product that is being sold to a population that is largely of anti-castro Cuban descent.

You'd have to be an idiot to say that in Miami. He's lucky if he's only fired. He could get shot!

His mistake is not in stating an opinion about Castro it's about making a political comment while representing his employer on a very politically polarizing subject in that particular region. Most people in American could care less about Castro but believe me they do in Miami. What a stupid thing for him to say!

Well, he expressed admiration for his longevity in the face of long odds. Blown way out of proportion by ideological, wild-eyed fanatics. Which is what most of the cubans in Miami are.

LOL

Yes, this is going to be a pretty big deal which has nothing to do with free speech but the consequences of that free speech. Much of the fan base is made up of people who were glad to get out of Cuba because of Castro. Ozzie being the top guy of the team they are expected to pay to see making a statement like that could cost the franchise. I'm sure the owner feels that action must be taken to try to save face....and bucks.

I bet the head coach of Alabama wouldn't stay employed long if he publicly supported Al Sharpton and Jesse Jacson. Nor do I think the head coach of Noter Dame would stay employed long if he publically supported Planed Parenthood.

When you are representing your employer you would be wise to keep your mouth shut about politics.

lol @ 'wild eyed fanatics'... the man stole their property and destroyed their country (in their eyes at least). I would say they are far more reserved than the left was when a certain G W Bush was in the White House. Now those were some wild eyed fanatics.

If some or many of these people of Cuban descent in Miami had either family members or friends suffer under the hand of Castro I'm not sure how that makes them ideological wild-eye fanatics to not like or despise the man.

Agreed. That doesn't make his comment any less stupid. This is a business after all.

Pretty broad brush you got there, Darla.

In any event, many Cuban defectors have pretty good reasons for being wild-eyed anti-Castro fanatics. Praising Castro for his longevity is like praising the 9/11 hijackers for their solid teamwork (HT: Daniel Tosh). Yes, this is America, but last I checked there ain't nothing in the Constitution about the right to manage a MLB team and earn millions of dollar while alienating your club's fan base.

Unlike righties, I am quite aware of what the first amendment actually states - which is why I did not bring up free speech.

The team absolutely has a right to do whatever they want here. I am not disputing that. However, IMO, we need only look back to the Elian Gonzalez debacle to see that in fact, the Cubans in Miami are indeed wild eyed, screeching, fanatics.

I can tell you've never been to Miami! There are no greater wild eyed fanatics in this nation then the right to return Cuban nationalist in Miami. If your ever down there don't even bring the subject up!

Shit man, the US Embargo of Cuba would have ended 20 years ago except for them.

I never said there was. IMO, public officials advocating for his firing, is a huge overreaction meant to pander to wild-eyed fanatics, and that's what those guys are. That I absolutely stand by. Broad brush? Maybe to people who don't remember their behavior during the Gonzalez affair. I can't stand those people.

I don't know why this shocked me that Dung said this but it did. I agree though and it is well stated.
