CCTV: What are your thoughts on this?

If there is anywhere government has gotten crazy with spending, CCTV has got to be one of the leading areas. I read a story where they are putting cameras on street sweepers now. It's even more out of control in Britain.
What are your thoughts? Should we have less cameras, more, no change?
I suppose they help with crime/safety but are worse for cost and privacy, I have no strong opinion either way.

It's always interesting to see how a rare non-partisan issue like this will play out with different people on here.

I can't imagine stepping into public and having an expectation of privacy regardless. Cameras don't bother me and if they reduce our violent crime rate (and who knows what effect they'll have, if any) then great.

Cost? Jesus. Give it a fucking break.

WHAT THE FUCK?

Fascists.

It's cameras, YL. In public places. Yeah, I guess your privacy in that drug deal is being intruded on, but it's constitutional law that you should have no reasonable expectation of privacy in a public place, and local jurisdictions can observe local places in whatever place they want.

Do you disagree with stakeouts too?

Dano, If you are not a criminal and have nothing to hide....

then we can talk about how "they" can monitor your location with your Cell Phone...

Have a list of everything you purchased, etc...

I agree that you have no reasonable expectation of privacy in a public place, but that's a far cry from the idea that all of your actions should be videotaped. Maybe that's just me, but the expansion of CCTV use gets my social libertarian "leave me alone" side in a tizzy.

It gets my 1984 paranoia up in a "tizzy".

I can't help but imagining the picture of Big Brother when they were able to see through it and the dismay of the protagonist when he found out about it....

Live in the "sticks", no CCTV cameras out here.

Umm on second thought, stay in the cities please. If the city folks move out here the CCTV cameras will come too.

Well the soloution to the health care costs of the elderly and SS is simple. fully enforce the "Prescription drug not in it's origional container" law ;)

I think we need to start the public CCTV network. It would make millions, the ultimate reality show :clink:

You can watch all the fat people go in and out of McDonalds and Wall Mart ;)

Do we have enough room to throw everyone in jail? I'm sure everyone has done something illegal...

If everyone's done something illegal, as you say, why should we go lax on enforcement and only put a few in jail? If it's everyones crime, get rid of the crime, don't go lax on enforcement and only punish 1%. Even if you gave those people the death penalty it would do nothing to deter crime.

I've been saying get rid of the crime for years but they ain't doing away with the crime. In a perfect society WM, I wouldn't give a damn about cameras. We wouldn't ever have to worry about disgusting discriminatory laws, and people would only be jailed when they are a serious threat to others, not just themselves. Unfortunatly, we don't live in that society. We live in a society where smoking a joint gets you thrown in jail for 5-10 years, walking home instead of driving after a drink is just as likely to get you in trouble, and driving without a seatbelt is reason to create government marketing ads about how you will be fined. The cops would rather sit and watch for things they can fine rather than protect peace, and using cameras wouldn't change that mindset. Instead, they will just use cameras to generate more income, and find more ways to reach into our pockets, all in the name of crime prevention. This is while real criminals evolve and find ways around the system to get away with shit.

Exactly. I have a similar problem with the practice of random, gratuitous drug testing. Wait until I've shown cause before invading my space and treating me like a criminal. Isn't that the principle behind that constitutional right?

Thank you. Finally another voice of reason on this thread.

Today, cameras on street corners.

Tommorrow, it's the Soviet Union! Perfectly logical connection there!

The police have no right to observe anyone anyone does. The only time they should be allowed to arrest you is whenever you admit to a crime.
