I'm sorry, but I'm fairly certain that there have been world-wide panics before that EVERYONE has believed....I wonder what happened with all of those.

It's not just "everyone" this time, it's the scientific community.

The global climate really is in a state of rapid change right now. The global mean temperature is rising: that's been confirmed by many researchers using many different techniques. What that will do in the short run remains controversial, as does the extent to which our mucking with the chemistry of the atmosphere contributes.
