China says its 2018 trade surplus with the US was the highest in more than a decade

Don't recall which one it was but I must of gone, lol.. I am snowshoeing & hiking mostly now days up in the beautiful Sierra Nevada range.

IMHO the new deal isn't all that different than the old one & negotiations seemed to me a lot like just making threats..

Hopefully something positive comes of the negotiations w/ China, the deadline approaches:)
Nice. not a mountain to be seen in Florida! the highest of the state is like 400 feet above sea level.
I can't hike with a bad knee, i try to swim a couple times a week. DARTH does mountain biking
~~

It's difficult to say just how much better NAFTA 2 is -there are some really good thing like auto parts content
that should keep Chinese parts out of the supply chain.

And it should reduce outsourcing, but the goal was never to get rid of NAFTA - but to improve it.
There are a lot of small things, but we just don't know until it's implemented.

It's quite possible the Dems will do their usual TDS and not approve it.
Hopefully not as it will be for the good of the country (and NAFTA partners) to get it going

Lighthizer did not "vote" on China's admissions to WTO.
He called it a mistake though as Chinese SOEs distort markets, and in China's case where they pursue mercantilism
instead of trade - bankrupts business deals ( like "1 belt 1 road" defaults to Chinese port acquisitions)

& yet, most of what I can recall reading/hearing were threats to just end it w/ Mexico & Canada...... :dunno: If it was me, an old salesman back in the day, I wouldn't threaten to do something I didn't want to do, to force a deal, especially since it aint all that much different........

Anyway, the deal is done, THE GREATEST DEAL OF ALL TIME!!! lol

the threat was to end it if it could not be renegotiated.
It's not done. Congress is already making noise about "worker protection" as a reason to scuttle it..

it needs to be more looked at as a poker player . am I bluffing or do i have a better hand?

The great deal maker:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Despite U.S. President Donald Trump launching a high-stakes trade war against Beijing last year, China on Monday announced that its 2018 trade surplus with Washington was its largest in more than a decade.
China's surplus with the U.S. grew 17 percent from a year ago to hit $323.32 billion in 2018, according to government data. It was the highest on record dating back to 2006, according to Reuters.
Exports to the U.S. rose 11.3 percent on-year in 2018, while imports from the U.S. to China rose a meager 0.7 percent over the same period.

China's overall trade surplus for 2018 was $351.76 billion, the government said. Exports in the whole of 2018 rose 9.9 percent from 2017 while imports grew 15.8 percent over the same period, official dollar-denominated data showed.

China says...hahahaha hahahahaha

What was the alternative??

Not sure what you mean by/how you define chinese mercantilism, but I have been reading about their deals along the upper & lower Mekong river, life blood to millions in SE Asia. Laos is set to let them build several dams, essentially destroying the local economies down stream as well deprive them of a very valuable food source. No concern for the environment what so ever..

well that's how it goes there.
China is rapacious -damn near wiped out the Asian hardwood forests as well.

Mercantilism means the SOE ( state owned enterprises) rely on cash infusions from the central bank.
The government and the economy is one in the same for those: which is why they depend on a positive balance of payments

The Chinese Communist Party shows few signs of easing its control of state-owned enterprises in the country. Much has been written on the need for reform of China's state-owned enterprises (SOEs). They play an important role in the Chinese economy, as they dominate China's strategic sectors and pillar industries.
