The missile that hit Diego Garcia did not have much of a blast, so a theory I have heard is they got extra range by removing the warhead.
That would, indeed, improve the range. Like Hitler's V-1 and V-2, Iran is using it as a terror weapon, not necessarily to do maximum damage.
My understanding is that both missiles failed to reach their target.
