Conservatives Outraged!

Now you're being facetious. I think there are some interesting philosophical arguments here about slavery v. factory workers etc. but the bottom line? It's all about the benjamins. It's greed and immorality on the part of the slaveholders and the factory owners who want to rake in the bucks while having the dirty work done by those they can exploit.

So what if some slaves had benevolent masters. Was it moral in the first place for rich s.o.b.s to go to Africa, capture natives and bring them back to serve? Was it moral for rich factory owners to demand a seven-day work week while paying a pittance to people who had no other choice but to accept it?

Let's cut to the chase, the only way both these practices came about and persisted was because of greed.

Yes of course I am being facetious, no it wasn't moral or right. I don't think anybody is saying otherwise apart from the usual suspects that choose to twist and distort your words for their own ends. Slavery existed for thousands of years with the Egyptians, Arabs and African tribes capturing their enemies and using them as slaves. I saw a BBC TV programme recently about some tribes in Africa that still practice slavery in the 21st century.

What? They didn't have the option to run away? There wasn't an "Underground Railroad" to assist them?

This country does not benefit today from the spirit of the runaway slaves?

I knew you were racist, in addition to being an anti-Semite. I can smell your type a mile away.

Fuckin' bigot.

if a slave ran away, what happened if he got caught? was his running away seen as a legal act even in the north? of course not. A convict can escape from prison too, but that does not make HIS lot only significantly less than a man not incarcerated.

You keep tap dancing away from your belief that being a slave was not significantly worse than being a free man. For you, you fucking coward, freedom means nothing... only creature comforts.... as long as they gave you some time to sit by the fire and play your banjo and they didn't whip you all that often, the live of a slave would have suited you just fine.

you are truly pathetic.

Since we're discussing option, which would you prefer:

1. Being a pioneer and encountering marauding Indians out on the prairie with your family
or
2. Being a runaway slave capture up north

???

Bigot.

#1 of course.

we now know that you would never have faced either option.... because you're too fucking scared.

pussy.

For the record those Perry novels about the poor in Victorian England were hard to read, especially what the children had to endure. The parents basically turned them out to fend for themselves at an early age; not that they didn't have a home to return to but that they were out from morning to night foraging for something they could sell for a penny, and often depending on the kindness of others to get food. And along with poverty and illness you had scummy adults luring kids both male and female and selling their services to perverts.

Yes and if they came back empty handed I daresay they could expect a damn good thrashing for their sins.

There were two Fugitive Slave Acts, 1793 and 1850, that penalized those who helped runaways and punished the slaves themselves, surely Daft heard of them.

Yeah, that's the only logical conclusion.

And you, the great keyboard warrior, would have not hesitated.

Which is why you're in Maine.

Effin' anti-Semite.

Again...you would have chosen the "possible" misery of life as a slave over the "certain" misery of a northern industrial worker.

That would have been YOUR choice... Certainly not mine.

You always do look for the safe option, don't you?

I am a man... I used to live in Maine, hence the screen name. And, unlike you, I was not afraid to leave my comfortable and familiar surroundings in Maine and set out on a grand adventure to travel to a foreign country where I did not know the language, or any other human being, find a home, renovate it, and experience life in a totally foreign culture.

Cowardly Taft's big daring adventure involves taking a different route to the supermarket. He would have rather been a slave than a free man. He is the textbook definition of coward.

You're not just a bigot, racist, and anti-Semite. Now you're a liar as well.

I said it wouldn't be an easy choice based upon the circumstances. I said if anyone said it was an easy choice, they're lying. So you bore out my prediction quite nicely.

Thank you.
