Contraception could be free under health care law

WASHINGTON – Fifty years after the pill, another birth control revolution may be on the horizon: free contraception for women in the U.S., thanks to the new health care law.

That could start a shift toward more reliable — and expensive — forms of birth control that are gaining acceptance in other developed countries.

But first, look for a fight over social mores.

A panel of experts advising the government meets in November to begin considering what kind of preventive care for women should be covered at no cost to the patient, as required under President Barack Obama's overhaul.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., author of the women's health amendment, says the clear intent was to include family planning.

"free"

what is it with the left...this isn't free....

and, should it be included under the coverage? should the government provide such to its citizens? --> or non citizens as well?

For women who cannot afford it, including those underage, contraception is already free via Planned Parenthood clinics. This includes the controversial "morning after pill".

true....but PP is not the government

Depends on how you look at it- they are heavilly subsidised by the federal government.

Since 2002 to 2009 they have received over a billion dollars.

Here are the groups, all of which promote abortion or provide abortion: Advocates for Youth, $8.7 million (2002-2009); the Guttmacher Institute, $12.7 million (2002-2008); International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), $93.8 million (2002-2009); Planned Parenthood Federation of America, $657.1 million (2002-2008); Population Council of the United States, $284.3 million (2002-2008); Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), $1.6 million (2002-2009).

This figure does not include additional State and Federal funding. The GAO report disclosed that its own Audit report "may understate the actual amount of federal funds the selected organizations and their affiliates spent."

It's a win-win situation. Fewer unwanted pregnancies means fewer abortions. Doesn't everyone win?

Exactly! Plus, the people who will benefit the most from free contraceptives are the poor because the poor have less money to spend on alternative, enjoyable activities. In other words they'll get more use out of whatever contraceptive they use. More bangs for the buck, so to speak.

Hey dodo fucking brain ANYONE who wants contraception can already get it for fucking free if they can't afford it!!!!!!!

So what's the fucking difference then? What's your bitching about. If its government funded either way, where's your beef?

Do you want less avenues to contraception? Do you want more unwanted pregnancy? Do you want more abortion?

Because sweetheart, less contraception = more abortion.

So take your pick. More abortion, or more contraception.

You can't have it both ways, even if the bible says so.

I am highly skeptical that taxpayer-funded contaceptives will do anything to significantly lower the number of abortions performed, especially taking into account the fact that contraceptives are already cheap / free via Planned Parenthood and other family planning organizations, which receive most of their funding through non-government sources. No need to create yet another big government program when the free market is working just fine. The only reason this is in the health care bill is it's a stepping stone to taxpayer-funded abortion, which is their ultimate goal.

So you are saying that people who can afford contraception won't buy it, but will use it if it's free? That's just dumb.

The difference would be that tax payers would start picking up the tab for not just the poor, but for those who don't need assistance. Keep government as small as possible beefcakes~

The majority of women who have abortions could have easily obtained contraceptives from the very place they go to get their abortions...

You make a good point, let me chew on this. BTW, you're a damn good looking woman. I seriously didn't even know you were a woman until Prendergass put your pic up.

Anyhow, Ill chew on this.

Perspectives you know.

why can't women be responsible for their vaginas?

Because they're so popular. Because so many people want in.

Perhaps the perfect analogy would be the Arizona border. Why does Arizona have a border problem and not, say, New York or North Dakota? :)
