Cool stem cell news

They think that sperm cells will be able to have the same flexibility & potential as embryonic stem cells:

That would certainly be some welcome news. I can't imagine what it must be like to have a disease like Parkinson's or be paralyzed & have to wait it out all of these years while Bush pretends to be concerned about the "sanctity of life"...

I'm unsure of what it means, after reading the article. Would this affect men only, and their blood relatives?

“They can also be transferred to other individuals who are a genetic match. You could even give it to a sister if they are genetically compatible,”

and it says it would give "men a medical repair kit". It's really interesting, but I'm just wondering if what they glean from this can also be used to treat women.

next thing you know holyrollers will say that sperm is a living thing and its a moral issue to use them to create stem cells.

Hmmmm.....missed that part! It sounds like it would only apply to genetic matches. Still, that gives hope to many more people than what we now have.

I expect that more embryonic lines will be funded in '09, anyway, unless Thompson wins...

Are you kidding? Something is wrong with Grandpa Fred...he's aging by the minute, and is obviously sick with something. He's going to be throwing elbows to get to the front of the line for stem cell treatment.

Umm the scripture about it is better to plant your seed in the belly of a whore than to spill it on the ground.

Yep the christian opposition already have scriptures in place.

then there is the going blind thing...

It is obvious. sperm has religious protections already.

I read about a drug store owner in the South who wouldn't sell birth control because he believed that sperm & eggs were "life".

Still, I think there would be much narrower support for such an argument. I don't even think Bush would make himself look so silly for the sake of pandering...

Umm you seem to be assuming bush has any sense of what looks silly...

Well, for Catholics... The protestant allows you to put a jimmy on the one-eyed beast to protect against that whole pregnancy thing.

1) That is certainly good news

2) Another faux outrage against Bush... the old "if the federal government won't fund something then no one is funding it" bullshit. There is NO reason the federal government should have to fund this one line of stem cell research. States can and have funded this line. Private money can and has funded this line. Enough of the bullshit.

"the old "if the federal government won't fund something then no one is funding it" bullshit. "

Of course other sources are funding it. However, it would be impossible to argue that Bush's decision hasn't set the research back significantly.

Again, that is bullshit. Embryonic stem cell research is in very early stages. It has produced ZERO results to date. To act as though the Federal government throwing more money into that line of research would have changed anything is purely speculative (at best).

You could just as easily make the claim that by not funding embryonic stem cell research and instead funding lines that have been more successful, that the fed is actually doing more good by not funding the research. (again, just as speculative as your claim... and just as valid)

Do you support the Bush policy on stem cell research?

Let's see...who to believe? Scientists in the field, or Superfreak?

You haven't read much about the research, quite clearly. It's potential at this point is not a matter of if anymore...it's a matter of when.

The fact is, research has been negatively impacted by Bush's decision; not just by the impact of funding, which is not negligible, but also on the nature of information-sharing & the the research in general. There is no argument that Bush has been an obstacle to progress on this topic; none.

You're just shooting from the hip, based only on how you feel funding should be handled...

Umm depends on the church. The one I was indoctrinated in only allowed abstinance or the rythm method... There was 6 kids in my family....
Assemblies of God...Teddys church :)

There's no doubt that when something big needs to get done, you give it to the federal government to do it. This is probably why funding for The Manhattan project was not 'left to the states". Or landing on the moon.

When the federal government makes something a priority, it's amazing what we can do, and in this case, we're talking about saving lives rather than extinguishing them.

Well, let's not be hasty. We better wait for Dano to check in. He might "know somebody" who was saved by a state, or, even private charity funded, adult stem cell discovery. I wouldn't be surprised, and I don't want to jump to conclusions and end up looking like an idiot.
