A militarized conspiracy theorist group believes radars are ‘weather weapons’ and is trying to destroy them​

National Weather Service offices around the country are on guard after recent threats to agency infrastructure — specifically Doppler weather radars — from a violent militia-style group, emails from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s security office show.

The group Veterans on Patrol, which the Southern Poverty Law Center defines as an anti-government militia organization, views the NWS’ network of Doppler radars as “weather weapons,” according to an internal NOAA email sent Monday and seen by CNN.

A previous email informing the NWS workforce of general, non-specific threats was sent May 1. Monday’s email was more action-oriented, with the NOAA security office noting they are aware of “several encounters,” physically or virtually, with Veterans on Patrol.

“This group is advocating for anyone and everyone to join them in conducting penetration drills on NEXRAD sites to identify weaknesses which can be used to ultimately destroy the sites,” the email stated, using an acronym for the weather radar network.

I don't see why they just don't sit back for awhile , Trump is already de funding them and taking NOAA apart .

Wouldn't it be so karmic if these crackpots did manage to damage a weather radar and the next day their trailer park was wiped out by a tornado that couldn't be forecast because the radar was damaged?

Yep. Our NWS office here is a very small outfit responsible for weather forecasts for not just the entire U.P. (an area about the size of Vermont), but also aviation and esp. marine forecasts. Three of their long-time employees are gone; they took early retirement. They now have had to quit issuing twice-daily forecasts and answering the public's questions and concerns on social media due to lack of personnel. They do still issue warnings on social media. We really miss the interaction and feeling that the NWS is part of our community. We've also noticed that when their weather radar and radio broadcasts are down, it takes sometimes over a week to repair them.

Good point. The only two radar sites I know of -- the one here and the one that serves STL -- are in residential neighborhoods. Hopefully that makes them less likely to be targets. Esp. if the nearby ppl are keeping an eye out for strangers lurking around.

It takes a special brand of idiot to think that the NWS can control the weather.

Lots of wackadoodle groups. Some more so than others.

What amazes me is how many of the White Nationalist militias have slunk back under their rocks after 1/6...especially when Trump threw them all under the bus within the week.

Despite Trump's pardoning them four years later*, they still haven't made much of an appearance.


*Was the pardon to buy their love? A peace offering after abandoning them the week following the Capitol coup attempt?

Agreed. Florida is in for a double-whammy; first Desantis is neck-deep in a scandal.
Second, it's the beginning of a hurricane season predicted to be stronger than normal.

It's not just the prediction problem with Trump's chainsawing of NOAA, but also Trump's chainsawing of FEMA that will see many Americans facing unnecessary suffering...as if he cares. Sad.
