Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has decided to suspend its defence agreement with Israel.
Although this may come as a surprise to many observers, as Italy’s right-wing government has been one of Israel’s closest allies in Europe, Zeidon Alkinani, founding director of the Arab Perspectives Institute, says that this is politically calculated and based on growing domestic pressure.
“Anyone who has closely observed Meloni’s government and stance would notice this is perhaps not out of an ideological or a political conviction,” he said.
“It’s perhaps due to the domestic pressures, referring to recent calls through the Italian parliament. Italian civil society has also played a vital role in expressing their willingness to end Italian support and being part of the Israeli genocide in Palestine.”
