Crude-Sucking Barges Stopped by Coast Guard

Eight days ago, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal ordered barges to begin vacuuming crude oil out of his state's oil-soaked waters. Today, against the governor's wishes, those barges sat idle, even as more oil flowed toward the Louisiana shore.


"It's the most frustrating thing," the Republican governor said today in Buras, La. "Literally, yesterday morning we found out that they were halting all of these barges."

Sixteen barges sat stationary today, although they were sucking up thousands of gallons of BP's oil as recently as Tuesday. Workers in hazmat suits and gas masks pumped the oil out of the Louisiana waters and into steel tanks. It was a homegrown idea that seemed to be effective at collecting the thick gunk.

"These barges work. You've seen them work. You've seen them suck oil out of the water," said Jindal.

So why stop now?

"The Coast Guard came and shut them down," Jindal said. "You got men on the barges in the oil, and they have been told by the Coast Guard, 'Cease and desist. Stop sucking up that oil.'"

A Coast Guard representative told ABC News today that it shares the same goal as the governor.

"We are all in this together. The enemy is the oil," said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Dan Lauer.

But the Coast Guard ordered the stoppage because of reasons that Jindal found frustrating. The Coast Guard needed to confirm that there were fire extinguishers and life vests on board, and then it had trouble contacting the people who built the barges.

Yes. It is. A simple order would have ended that embarrassment very quickly. I've said it repeatedly, they absolutely need to cut this red tape. Fricking counting life jackets. Geebus.

I suspect there is much more to the story than Bobby Jendell's version of it. I do not trust that man.
 
Maybe it's just me, but it seems that having fire extinguishers on a barge that is sucking up highly combustible material seems to make sense, particularly for people that have to work on the fucking barge.

I also find it somewhat ironic that the same asshats that criticized Obama and his administration for not enforcing safety regulations are suddenly criticizing Obama and his administration for enforcing safety regulations.

try balancing act...the so called safety regs are squat compared to the harm done by not sucking up the oil...further, they could have been checked out while sucking up oil....

i know, that is outside your liberal talking points, so come back tomorrow when you get your new talking points :)

And with you Obama can do no right. How's that any better? And after 57 days of oil gushing in the Gulf, a 24-hour max delay to ensure the safety of the workers in the clean up effort to prevent further loss of life isn't going to appreciably change anything.

is this correct?

and we all know if bush was in office, 24 hours would be a lifetime to you...you never once defended bush on a 24 hour timeline....

Why don't you try for once to deal with the substance of what people say instead of resorting to calling people hacks and hypocrites?

The fact of the matter is that the 24-hour delay (if it was that long) to ensure that the safety of the workers was protected isn't likely to cause any appreciable additional harm. I understand why Jindal would be upset about it, I would be too, but that doesn't mean it was a bad decision.
