DACA Deal Likely Dead

President Trump on Saturday argued Democrats are “doing nothing” toward crafting federal legislation that would permanently protect nearly 800,000 young illegal immigrants, as the White House and congressional leader grapple over a solution ahead of a deadline next week.

The president and Congress are attempting to reach a deal as part of a federal spending bill that congressional leaders must pass by Friday to avoid a government shutdown.

Trump held a televised meeting earlier this week at the White House with congressional Democrats and Republicans on comprehensive immigration reform -- which would almost certainly include protection for young illegal immigrants, known as DREAMers, in exchange for Trump’s U.S.- Mexico border wall and the elimination of so-called “chain migration.”

A bipartisan group of senators later submitted a plan to the White House , but the $1.6 billion for the wall and other factors like chain immigration were not agreeable .

he White House by Thursday essentially rejected the deal, arguing it didn’t go far enough to curtail so-called “chain migration,” which allows green card holders and U.S. citizens to petition to bring family members into the United States.

“We want changes to chain migration, and not to a very small percentage of the population and how it affects chain migration,” said Marc Short, the White House legislative affairs director. “We want chain migration fixed for the immigration system.”

Trump tweeted Saturday: “The Democrats are all talk and no action. They are doing nothing to fix DACA. Great opportunity missed. Too bad!”

He later tweeted: “I don’t believe the Democrats really want to see a deal on DACA. They are all talk and no action. This is the time but, day by day, they are blowing the one great opportunity they have. Too bad!”

The president last year ended temporary protection from deportation for the DREAMers, under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrvials, or DACA, program. That program officially ends in March, but Democrats and others had hoped to reach a deal under the upcoming spending bill.

On Thursday, Trump criticized the bipartisan deal in harsh terms.

"The Democrats seem intent on having people and drugs pour into our country from the Southern Border, risking thousands of lives in the process. It is my duty to protect the lives and safety of all Americans," he tweeted. "We must build a Great Wall ..."

the gang of 6 deal was a joke..it was in the making long before the deadline on DACA..Jeff Flake was for it..

But DACA is supposed to be a Democratic party concern, and there is no movement at all from them.

The Dems killed DACA

I think they want it as a 2020 campaign issue, but we will see. They may let Rump shut down the government over it.

The Republican party controls the entire federal government including the supreme court.

Trying to blame Democrats ain't gonna pass muster.

oh FFS. do you EVER think ?? ?

How many votes does it take for Immigration Reform ? 60 to bypass a fillibuster.

cute. Congress does the budgeting, not the executive..DACA doesn't "end" - Trump's deadline -until March-
so this isn't the end of it, but you have to wonder the chance it will be re-visited by then if it fails now.

Plus we supposedly got infrastructure coming up...will the Dems sit on their hands for that too?

We will see who the voters blame in November.

sure..but we are missing bi-partisan opportunities on immigration reform and infrastructure repair.
That should supersede partisan politics. no?

It should, yes. It did not matter when the Republicans were out to get Obama, and it won’t matter now that the Democrats are out to get Trump.

not good..I certainly understand the pull of partisan politics. as much as I despise them; it's the way of DC...
but these are issues of concrete interest to all Americans- immigration reform and infrastructure are both pressing needs.

It would be terrible missed opportunity to not even try.

The Democrats learned from the Republicans how to get a majority, I suspect it will work for them just as it did for the Republicans.

so all talk about bi-partisanship for the common good is essentially horseshit, and the need for DACA inclusions is subservient to petty partisan politics..got it.

Not as I believe it should be, it’s just how it is.
