He paid it before the election, not after. It’s about his intent and he spells that out on the audio tape. He did not care if his family heard it, at the time the deal was made he only cared about the election.

If one with any reading comprehension at all actually does read the content of the letter, it says that neither the Trump Organization (note the capitals) nor the Trump campaign was a party to the payment. It is silent about Trump PERSONALLY being the party, which, of course is the gist of the charges against him, PERSONALLY.

But, the pro-Trump people can’t seem to recognize that little detail.
