You closed the thread right as I was trying to ask what the difference between sweetie and sweatheart is on the offensive scale.

i pm'd him about this. i don't understand his mod attitude.

That thread needed to be shut a lot sooner. I was just teasing about shutting right as I was hitting send on a post.

The fact of the matter is if you cannot have a political discussion without dropping C-bombs you probably shouldn't be posting. Then when the talk turns personal nothing positive is going to come of it.

i agree with you about the c-bomb and the personal info war.

I'm a southerner. I have been called both sweetie and sweetheart more times than I can count.

All this time I should have been offended? Who knew?

If you just got here click on the now closed 'Chris Christie: Pig' thread and you can see his speech where he refers to a woman as sweetheart. Another video was found of Obama as a Senator where he refers to a female reporter as sweetie. Hence the which term is more offensive discussion.

Do you feel marginalized when they do?

Is it done by little gray haired ladies from another generation or by a young woman in her 30's. My husband may call me sweetie, but I do not let other men call me by that reference, I correct them.

I have known many people who frequently address the opposite sex with pet names such as sweetie. They don't intend it as offensive or condecending. I don't do this, but I can see how really warm, fuzzy people get to be like that, because I am the kind of guy who gets a sort of emotional boost everytime I see a woman smiling.

Go ask your mother if she likes her clients or colleagues calling her sweetie or sweetheart, hon or baby, or if she might find it a bit offensive. Would you call your boss sweetie?

It depends on the region and the person you're dealing with. Some people are just looking to be offended.

Only word I ever use to a woman is ma'am. I don't use those other terms. Not my style.
