It is killing people who would probably die in the next 20 years. Some could have lived even longer. 20 years is the difference between never seeing your grandchild, and watching her graduate from high school and go to college. We should see a drop in the number of people dying as far out as 20 years from now.

If the disease does continue to mutate and hit us over and over again, then we will see a decade drop in life expectancy. If every year, a new wave of coronavirus washes through the world with no vaccine, anyone who would have been able to hold on for 20 years will die. People who die because of accidents, or quick illnesses will not see a change in lifespan. People who die from lengthy chronic conditions will find it a lot less lengthy.

If it continues to mutate and stay in the body, like HIV(a retrovirus), then it will mean either the extinction or near extinction of humanity. Covid-19 kills about 1% of those that have it in the first four weeks; while HIV never kills anyone in the first four weeks. Covid-19 is far more contagious than HIV. If every couple of months we have to fight off another major Covid-19 attack in our bodies for the rest of our lives, it will wear us down greatly.

Which is the way flu deaths are counted. Even if they have other serious health issues, they are counted as flu deaths because flu contributed to their death.

Shouldn't we count Covid-19 deaths the same way as the flu? By doing so, we see that Covid-19 is much more deadly than flu.

So you are left arguing that Covid-19 is the same as flu as long as we don't count deaths differently. The simple fact of the matter is, even with shutdowns Cov-19 is 3 to 4 times more deadly than flu. Without shutdowns it might be 10 times more deadly than flu.

Lets say Covid-19 is a permanent fixture in our lives from here on out. About half of people who die have had about 20 years of serious health issues leading up to it, with the other half dying suddenly (car accidents, quick moving cancer, etc.). So Covid-19 would move up about half of all deaths by about 20 years... Meaning we lose about a decade of life expectancy.

These are all rough numbers. We might lose only five years of life expectancy, or we may lose 20 years of life expectancy. Whatever it is, it would be very bad.
