The fact is the southern Dems were called Dixie crats. They were titular Dems, but voted for many Repub programs and fought any programs that helped minorities. When LBJ passed the Civil Rights Bill, the southern Dems moved en masse to the Repub party, their natural home. They have been there ever since. LBJ said we lost the southern vote for a generation.
