The storm surge effects the coast. Once the storm travels inland, it loses strength.

I'm familiar with Andrew and evacuated. I worked in the area until 1998. Homestead AFB was flattened. The Weeks Air Musuem had all of its planes slammed against what remained of the west wall. Areas south of MIA were pitch black for weeks, some for months.

That was the huge mistake that DeSantis made. He did not realize there are two ways hurricanes can kill, with wind and with water. The water from Ian. About a hundred people died because of this mistake.
But on the bright side, DeSantis was able to show off his pretty white princess boots.
This is another mistake that people make, thinking the the flash floods inland from hurricanes are no big deal. It is not unheard of for a hurricane to kill more people inland than at the coast, because the coast is more used to dealing with the water.

Today, Governor Ron DeSantis traveled to Lee County to give updates, survey impacted areas and to deliver supplies to Sanibel Island. While visiting Matlacha in Lee County, the Governor announced the emergency road and bridge repairs for Pine Island have been completed in less than three days. The Governor also brought Florida Department of Transportation engineers to Sanibel Island to begin construction on a bridge to the island. Full remarks can be found here.
This morning, President Biden approved the Governor's request to make additional disaster funding available to the State of Florida and extended the time period for 100 percent federal funding for an additional 30 days, giving Florida a total of 60 days at 100 percent funding following Hurricane Ian.
There are currently 298,820 reported power outages. They have already restored power nearly 2.4 million accounts across the state, representing 88.92% of accounts restored since the peak. There are currently 11 fueling depot stations open statewide, and a mobile fuel truck has been deployed to Arcadia to support residents without access to fuel.

It goes without saying the stronger the storm the more damage.
Water damage is the biggest threat in a hurricane be it storm surge, or flash flooding due to the torrential rain, that is why your home insurance covers wind damage but not flooding. Then you also ignore the damage tornadoes cause when spawned by even mild CAT 1 storms.
Yes each level gets deadlier but don't write off CAT 1 and 2 storms.
FYI being a old Florida boy I have experienced hurricanes most of my life either near hurricane Michael or far Andrew.
Your cavalier attitude concerning hurricanes can get you killed.

You miss the whole point. It is impossible for me or DeSantis to know everything. In any society there is a division of labor, and of expertise. Your belief that DeSantis knows everything is what is leading to him making mistakes. He needs to listen to those who know more than him.
I do believe DeSantis has some control over where was evacuated, and more control over where he warns people to evacuate from. His announcement that people should be "free" to stay in flood prone areas, and that it would be safe killed about a hundred people.

Do we REALLY care about military service in the US? I don't think so. I think our leaders GLADLY send young men and women into combat and when they come back we all, as a nation, collectively shrug our shoulders and let them die of suicide from the PTSD or from horrific cancers because of open burn pits or interesting herbicides.
We in American could NOT care less about who is a war hero or who sacrificed on our behalf. We literally couldn't care less.
