Detained shoplifter in Ohio Walmart pulls a loaded gun on a police officer and pulls the trigger....

I don't see how that would do much, if anything, either.

You can't significantly curtail the mental fucked-upedness of millions of people, some of whom aren't really even mentally ill but just assholes, with an army counselors that only number in the thousands.

I just don't see how it would be possible to put a significant dent in the level of gun violence that exists in the US via mental health counseling. I don't think there are enough qualified counselors out there to meet the demand of counseling a society of 350 million people.

The only thing that would put a stop to it would be to stop the flow of guns, bullets, gunpowder, the ingredients to make gunpowder etc.

And that would be a monumental task which would take years to accomplish and cost a lot of people on both sides, their lives in the process.

It's a tough and complex problem which the gun worshipping political right has gotten us into, and with no easy way out.

Just one more aspect of modern life that has been ruined by the small-minded ignorance of conservatism.
It wouldn't be easy.

OTOH, the Democratic strategy of repeating the same thing over and over again for 35 years hoping for a different result fits the definition of insanity. Especially considering that the main results have been reaffirming the Second Amendment and a 6-3 conservative SCOTUS due to other Democratic fuckups.

Ask yourself where you want us to be in 5 years and in 10 year, then ask yourself if we're on that path. Sure, you want to ban guns, even if only semi-automatic, magazine-fed civilian "military-style" guns ala' the Clinton Gun Ban. Who really believes that's a realistic goal?

And who'd be picking their brains off the wall after all those bullets started flying around and ricocheting off the walls and taking off chunks of their flesh?

I think you misunderstand the primary goal of the police, which is to not shoot anyone.

You gun goobers are such a bunch of geniuses. :palm:

Anyone with a hint of intelligence will make sure of what's behind the target, and fire only what is necessary to stop the threat.
You talk like everyone carrying is carrying a machine gun. That's not the case. If the need arises, some of us know when to shoot, and when not to.

By finding a way to prevent people like that from having weapons designed for murder.
Human beings have a unique capacity to turn nearly everything into a weapon and commit murder. Read stories about prisoners such as WWII Allied prisoners in Germany or current prisoners in US prisons to see examples of human innovations. They exemplify the maxim "Necessity is the mother of invention".

Better, IMHO, to understand why people would need or create weapons and commit murder.

Example:

People who would pull a gun on a police officer. People who are mentally ill.
I get the mentally ill part. Most of the time we should be able to identify them. “People who would pull a gun on a police officer” would be harder to identify ahead of the act, I’d think.

True, but worth pursuing. These kind of events are very rare in most other countries. There must be a reason for that.

See,...now that's the real shame here. If only everyone else around him would have been armed the minute he pulled his gun they ALL could have opened up on him and peppered him so full of lead they would STILL be picking his brains off the wall. But noooooooooooo....
Just what we need more feeble minded Rambos running around with guns, to administer justice.

Agreed. He's 21 and just threw his life away. What sane person would do that over a shoplifting charge? Sad.

Body camera footage shows the moment police say a 21-year-old shoplifting suspect pulled a gun out and tried to shoot an officer at a Walmart in Canton, Ohio. The suspect has been charged with attempted murder, according to police.

And killed a dozen bystanders.

Why can you kids not get it through your head that everyone being armed will end in a disaster?

Nope. I'm about as liberal as they come and I'm FFL-1 SOT-3. Just because I think it's a terrible idea for everyone to go the the grocery store armed to the teeth doesn't mean I'm anti gun.
Relax. Texas became open carry in 2016 since then I have seen TWO people exercising their right to open carry. Texas became a Constitutional carry state in 2021 and we have had no increase in gun violence. I have been a licensed carrier for over 20 years and I have never shot anyone or even pulled my weapon out.

Anyone with a hint of intelligence will :blah:
In case you haven't noticed, the world is full of people WITHOUT a hint of intelligence. I suppose after the dead and wounded got carted away and their families wanted to know why, you'd just tell them that they should have had a hint of intelligence.

:palm:
So you don’t think poor people should own a firearm? 🤔
Yep. Nobody other than law enforcement and the military should even carry firearms.
Putting criminals in jail and make it harder for them to get out.
In which case they'd just be replaced by NEW CRIMINALS to stuff in jail after the damage they cause is already done. How much more in taxes are you willing to pay so that more jails can be built and staffed in order to keep them all locked up for life?

(Hint: think before you post.)

Will you take lives away too. Asking for the Reiner family.

Regular screening would help with this problem. A lot of this can be done online with regular testing. It would note trends in mood and behavior. Unlike this incident, most problems are with suicide and such testing would help identify those sinking into a dark hole.

The 21-year-old just threw his life away. He'll be lucking to get out of prison before age 40 since the charges include attempted murder of a police officer. As a society, we should do better.

Note that banning ARs wouldn't have changed this situation one iota. In fact, the most common firearm used in suicides and murders is exactly what he had: a 9mm semi-automatic pistol. The gun banners who say they only want to ban ARs are either stupid or lying.
