Unfortunately it seems to be the modern world, probably drugs related.

Actually it just gets reported more, look at the UCR(uniform Crime Report) Over the last 50 years, violent crime has not gone up that much, it's just reported more and sensationalized in the news. And of course making people scared is good business for security and gun company's.

i suspect that this sort of thing happened just as often before we had so many people and almost instantaneous transmission of 'news'

i suspect that the percentage of people that committed these sorts of crimes is about the same

some people are just wired wrong
