I have said this for quite some time. The article was a but odd in its link to libertarianism, but whatever.

If you oppose the lottery you oppose educating children because the lottery funds education.

Didja know that Florida cut budgetary funding for schools dollar for dollar after the lottery was started? Didja also know that Florida then started taking the school's lottery money to make up for other shortfalls in the budget?

The result? Florida schools are getting less money than ever.

1 in 17 million sound like good odds to me. My stepfather spends ~ $10-40 a day on lottery. . . or did, last I checked. I told him if he sent me the money instead I'd take care of him when he's old crazy feeble.

Back in the 80's, WA got a state lottery passed by promising it would fund education. It's 2013, and all of the money now goes into our pathetic General Fund - meaning nothing is going to education anymore (since the state doesn't permit it's pet black hole to be audited, I can safely say that's most likely true).

Same in California. It was suppose to be additional money spent on education. Instead the politicians used it to replace existing money spent on education.

Knos what really pisses me off? I got five of six (last number off by one) on the lotto in 96. Tks to that one number I only got $1700.

yes becuase poor people are often smart enough to vote Dem.

playing the lottery is a dream machine.

you can dream about being showered with money for the rest of your life.

a dream most people have in a world where money runs everything.

I perfer a system of paying for things that centers on reality.

You know paying taxes for the shear joy of building a better country.

How did they get so smart - reading leftist blogs profusely while their economic situation fell apart?

I have always seen the lottery as paying for a dream. For a buck, you get to spend a day or so thinking about what your life would be like if you won. It's fun to think about that, and worth a buck.

But I do feel bad for the folks who get obsessed with it, and go and spend a ton of hard-earned cash really trying to win the thing.

1) Why do you double space every fucking post?

2) What would you know about reality?

From a middle class perspective I hear you. From a lower income perspective while people are free to do with their money what they wish it's not something I would be recommending.

So poor people are smart enough to vote Democrat but not smart enough to not blow their money on the lottery and not smart enough to not be poor.

(Yes that is partially tongue-in-cheek)

I buy periodically, but never more than one ticket in a week.

As Lorax said, it is buying a dream for a day (or a few days if you buy early). If you buy every now and again, not a big deal. But it can be a problem, especially for those that are desperate for a better life and see no other way to get there.
