I came across an interesting podcast last night by a guy named Chase Hughes. He’s supposed to be some behavioral expert, but, as I look into his background, his credentials seem a bit sketchy. However, he did make some good points.
Basically, he said there are those, while not identifying them specifically, that intentionally create divisions in this country for one purpose. To gain and stay in power. I agree 100%.
As I look back to the presidents in my lifetime, (I have a direct recollection of Kennedy) never have we seen one who has so intentionally try to create division and chaos in this country as Trump. He refers to anyone who opposes him, criticizes him, or otherwise stands in his way as “vermin”, “corrupt”, or any other number of insults attacking their character, honesty, intelligence, patriotism and even their physical characteristics.
There have been divisive presidents for sure. Johnson and Nixon come to mind, of course. Johnson for Vietnam and Nixon for Watergate. Nixon also publicly attacked the Vietnam protesters.
But NOBODY comes close to the vitriol of this guy. A constant barrage of insults, demeaning and even outright threatening comments. Identifying groups such as immigrants, gays, trans, scientists, the media, the courts and universities as enemies of this country. Threats to use his office to punish his detractors.
So, no fucking wonder we are seeing political violence. The divisiveness starts at the top and enflames those who allow themselves to be swallowed up and consumed by it.
All for the purpose of gaining and staying in power. The fascists a century ago used the same tactics to come into power.
