I was surfing through a political blogosphere and this topic was being discussed

Ever wonder....? Apparently they do, many talk show hosts and Congress persons have people monitoring blogs and political forums such as this and There has been times when I have posted a thought early in the morning only to find that exact same thought being discussed on an afternoon or evening political talk show ...radio and/or TV .... we are being monitored!

No se.

But I thought I heard Dixie on CSPAN one morning praising Bush and the job he's doing in Iraq and blaming the democrats for everything gone wrong in the last 6 years.

Well .. members of Congress and the Media do pay people to monitor the pulse of America.. and I have to believe reading what bloggers write and what forum members discuss is a great way to get a feel for that pulse.

imho

Of course we are being watched, but I suspect that we are not alone on our ideas. Others see what is going on in the world and sometimes draw the same conclusions as we do.

I don't think any prominent political operatives are reading this, or SRs board.

Honestly, I think there's sort of a subconcious collective awareness and lexicon that permeates political junkie communities such as ours. Things that you or I post that we thing are "original thoughts", may be subconcious expressions of something we read or heard earlier -- on cspan, on cable, or on blogs.

Honestly, I think a lot of the "orginal thoughts" I post, are actually loosely based on months and years of reading the writings of analysts that are far smarter than me. Much of my views on the Iraq conflict are shaped by experts like Juan Cole. And I'm sure Juan Cole's writings indirectly permeate much of the "original postings" I make on Iraq.

It would be a mistake to think, though, that such people are taking any special interest in this particular board. There are literally thousands of these forums out there. To concentrate on one or two, any one or two, would bias their sample even more than doing it ad hoc already does.

They're probably doing a combination of surfing at (I would hope) randomly selected sites and searching for keywords and specific phrases. Which reminds me:

The Chimp's a fascist!
Out of Iraq now!
The trouble with the Taliban is they've got lousy aim!
Impeach Cheney first!
No blood for oil!

There. I've just made someone's day.

I think a lot of this is true. Also, people are the same everywhere. I can remember being almost convinced that Tom Tomorrow had to be reading the bush board. One time he posted this cartoon about the 101st fighting keyboardists, and it could have been ripped straight out of Sarge's posts. But...then after a while I just realized, there are people like Sarge all over the internet.

I mean, there's no one like me!, but for the most part, the same stuff is going on all over the net.

Yeah, they'd be all over. I'd say the huge sites like, Kos, Little Green Footballs the HuffPO and Freepers are monitored more. But other sites, they're just randomly checking.

A long time ago, I wrote an e-mail to Rush Limbaugh (yeah I know), the next day I actually heard him, word for word, take credit for my thought. I have never sent him another thing.

Totally agree. This is exactly why monitoring specific boards would be counterproductive.

Totally! The first time I ever heard that "101st Fighting Keyboardists" thing, was from Markos at Dailykos. Who knows where that got started? But, I'm sure a lot of people take credit for it

Umm, basically the govt scans the entire net for information. And digitally transmitted telephone calls as well.

OTOH, I do remember that 101st fighting keyboardists cartoon. I thought that Tom Tomorrow must be reading your posts! It actually did occur to me almost instantly.:)

So now we know where Rush gets all his ideas :D
LOL. No, I have no idea who he is stealing from at this moment. It was a serious e-mail on the border and it was before Bush was even thought of... He fricking stole right from the e-mail and never credited me. I would have been happy if he even said, "Listen to this e-mail"... Instead he quoted me word for word and made it seem as if it were his original thought. He ticks me off.

True, but the shear volume of information limits what they can do with it.

The East German government was arguably the most efficient in all of history at collecting surveilance data on their own citizens. The irony was that they choked themselves on data: there was so much information that things were missed simply because there weren't enough hours in a day to go over a day's worth of data. They literally couldn't train enough agents to do it.

Now consider the combined internet and telephone traffic of the western world. That amount of data is orders of magnitude greater than that faced by the rulers of the DDR. Many orders of magnitude greater.

It's THE defining issue of data mining. Broaden your search too far and you're swamped with too much irrelevant noise. Tighten it too far and you miss the very things you're looking for.
