Why the tone BAC? Very unlike you. I've actually looked for books on the Cuban revolution and haven't found any decent ones. I would have thought there would have been more out there.

So why is there no internet in Cuba except for tourists and the favoured? There are some government approved wi-fi hotspots in Havana but they are expensive and censored.

I went to Vietnam earlier this year and even the smallest village with a roadside cafe had free WiFi. Not always the fastest but more than adequate to check emails, Facebook and even JPP.

The cuba situation is difficult. Did their lives get better from the previous corrupt admin? It looks like it. But you dont really know what would have happened if the US kept investing money in it as it was beggining to do. It could very well be a territory now.

The thing is you cannot divorce Castro's good from his bad. You want the higher literacy rate and medical service that Castro claimed to provide? Then it comes with the totalitarian dictatorship castro gives as well.

You have a rose coloured view of Castro that is not matched by the reality. You did the same with Chavez and look at Venezuela now, a place where even toilet paper is in short supply.

No context can justify the behavior of Castro and his regime. He is very similar to Batista in that regard. Fulgencio overthrew a dictator and helped establish a liberal constitution. Once he saw his power slipping away, he betrayed Cuba and attacked liberal democracy. Castro overthrew Batista, but, rather than restore liberal democracy and the Cuban constitution, he became just another Marxist despot.
