I'm not sure how you label it, but belief in these conspiracy theories demonstrates a debilitating flaw in rational thinking. Every one of them breaks down under the least bit of sunlight.

I've used socks when first online, mostly around the 2000-2004ish time frame.

There are multiple reasons to use socks, all involve a level of dishonesty, a lack of integrity and/or pettiness.

Socks are great for revenge (second account to troll someone you dislike) while maintaining "respectability" for your primary account.

Socks are great for pushing an agenda. If I want to push the belief that 9/11 was "an inside job", using multiple accounts agreeing/liking or "discussing" (meaning talking to oneself like shadow boxing) is one way to spread that idea. Most people aren't that fucking nutty, but fucking nutty people do it. INT/IBDa/gfm, as proved by their signatures and fake forum confirm that is what they are doing - pushing a paranoid schizophrenic agenda.

Socks are great if you want to give yourself likes or double/triple the number of dislikes against others. On some forums this actually makes a difference, but I think that is now outdated due to abuses.

I'm sure there are other reasons, but those are the ones that come to mind.

A "debilitating flaw in rational thinking" = irrational thinking.

The next question to ask is "Is this a single topic thing for the person or do they have lots of irrational ideas?" Both Hawkeye and INT/IBDa/gfm, and others, have lots of irrational ideas which indicates mental illness to some degree. Hawkeye is much better than INT in that regard, but both would benefit from proper medical treatment (both counseling and medication).

If it's just one topic that gets a person "too excited" or where they become irrational, it's a temporary thing that will pass. A woman in the middle of a divorce because her cheating bastard husband was fucking her best friend may hate all men, and some women, for awhile, but as time passes she'll be fine. Counseling would help. Maybe a couple of Xanaxes at first but it's a temporary issue. Not so with our resident nutjobs.

A woman who has been attacked and raped and wasn't given treatment or justice in the courts may have a very strong dislike of many things. She would definitely need treatment, mainly counseling and maybe some medication, but that too, like PTSD, would pass with treatment. Most, however, go untreated for whatever reason just like most PTSD cases go untreated. This is an area where our nation fails its own citizens culturally, medically and with legislation.

Family members and other loved ones are worth the effort (fight) to help. Anonymous strangers on the Internet are not. They don't want help, they want to validate their irrational ideas on the internet. If 9 out of ten people tell them to fuck off but one says "YES!" then the nutjob is happy.
