Rather than brushing off Nazi salutes by Elon Musk and Steve Bannon, columnist Cameron Smith should be writing about the U.S. being in the early stages of an authoritarian takeover by the Trump administration using Project 2025 as a blueprint.

Formulated by the Heritage Foundation, a radical far right think tank, Project 2025 was written in close consultation with Viktor Orban, the far-right authoritarian “elected” leader of Hungary for the past 24 years.

Orban is a darling of the GOP. Trump and the Republicans idolize Orban’s strongman seizure of power. And he has been training Republicans on the methods he used to achieve his Christian nationalist, authoritarian “state capture” of Hungary.
