Lettuce Recalled Over E. Coli Concerns

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Less than a week after the Food and Drug Administration lifted its warning on fresh spinach grown in California's Salinas Valley, a popular brand of lettuce grown there was recalled Sunday over concerns about E. coli contamination.

The lettuce does not appear to have caused any illnesses, the president of Salinas-based Nunes Co. Inc. said.

The lettuce scare comes amid other federal warnings that some brands of spinach, bottled carrot juice and recent shipments of beef could cause grave health risks - including paralysis, respiratory failure and death.

Executives ordered the recall after learning that irrigation water may have been contaminated with E. coli, said Tom Nunes Jr., president of the company.

Hmm, seems like the growers in CA might be wanting more govt regulation , not less.

yep, they will need some kiind of Govt approval/control to reagin the consumers confidence. The spinach business is busted and now the lettuce one ?

Lettuce would if they hadn't recalled it before people died. Their proactive response will save them.

Perhaps, perhaps not, people are already shy of spinach....
And it tood the FDA how long to find out where the contaminated lettuce came from ?

I think it is silly to say the government is untrustworthy on one subject and then assume perfection and stability in another.

this is getting annoying. I still can't get a spinach salad at the take out place near my house. I almost had a coniption (sp?) last night

Did they find the source of the Spinach finally?

Was it watering their fields with Sewar water? What caused the spinach contamination of ecoli?

If it was watering their plants with contaminated water instead of fresh water, have the owners of the spinach farm been charged with MURDER or Manslaughter for killing the 3 people?

How does a farm have the ability to water with sewar water verses clean water? Did they hook the contaminated water in to their spinkler system?

Over a week.
They cannot test every batch coming out. It simply cannot be done. It takes about that long for it to get to market, it was quickly recalled. Last time it took a long time to center where this is coming from, not so much this time.

Nah, the rivers in that area are pretty well infected. They are supposed to chlorinate the water to a specific level and weren't.

Damo they were coning out with additional recalls one week after the spinich e-coli link was known. Why are you being a spinich apologist ?

I'm not, I said it took them much longer to figure out where the infested spinach came from.

I just believe that had they followed the government rules and properly chlorinated they wouldn't have had this problem. More restrictive rules are not really necessary. Fine the people who didn't follow the rules and move on.

Is or was this intentional negligence? Will they be charged with the deaths of these people for their INTENTIONAL actions? Was it a SHORTCUT that saved them money and time and that is why they did not chlorinate the water? Or was it just a "mistake" that watered enough spinach for almost the entire country's need with this contaminated water? Where were the checks and balances on this and where ARE the checks and balances on this...?

I doubt that we are even enforcing the rules very much Damo.
I notice you did not say punish the people who broke the rules...

It is very likely that lawsuits will ruin several companies who will be taken over by more careful companies.

What the hell? I said to fine them. That is the power that they have! Man, you really do have blinders on.

Oops Damo, I misread Find from fine. But we should not increase inspections or anything to ensure a safe food supply ?
