We did elect a fundamentalist President and we did shit our pants because he was far more incompetent that our worst fears. That's entirely beside the point. Are you really that niave to think that people in another nation are going to vote for a person on the basis that they are popular in the USA and support our foreign policy? Are you infering that Egypt should have a US supported dictator like Mubarek? Do you support democracy or don't you?

Huh. I must have missed the part where Bush enshrined the Ten Commandments into law. Apparently people getting their hands chopped off for stealing, women being whipped in the streets, etc. has also escaped my notice.
I am inferring no such thing. I am all for self-determination. However, I am disgusted by liberals cheering as though this is some sort of "victory" when it is not. It is a terrible thing when ANY religion dominates the politics of a country - especially a fundamentalist interpretation of a religion.

Oh, don't you get it? They have to cheer it, the right was against it and that's all it takes these days! It doesn't matter how deplorable and reprehensible it is, the only factor is how the right was against it... that means liberals have to be FOR it, don't you understand? You see, little simple-minded turds like Jughead, can't think past party loyalty. They have no problem with radical Islam or fundamentalists enslaving people, because they can't wrap their simple minds around such a thing, it's beyond their capacity to understand. All Jughead knows, is the right didn't want this, so it must be GREAT for liberals!
What has happened in Egypt, while we sat on our thumbs and listened to morons like Jughead CHEER, will turn out to be one of the greatest disasters ever in the middle east. Thousands, if not millions, will die... perhaps even some American soldiers, before it's said and done... but this doesn't matter now... they can always find some way to blame THAT on Bush policies or evil Right-wingers when it happens, no need to worry with it at this time.

Some folks just don't get it. It's not about separation of church and state or mosque and state. It's not even about democracy. It's about letting the people decide what they want.
How can anyone who believes in democracy attend church? Millions of people living their life by rules laid down 2000+ years ago. Rules they never voted on and rules they'll never vote on.
There's that old saying, "Don't just talk the talk, walk the walk." If one wants to talk about hypocrisy maybe it's time to take a closer look at those who claim to support democracy while publicly claiming their faith plays an important part in decision making. Maybe it's time to take a closer look at those who support churches and faith organizations when they and democracy are diametrical opposites. Maybe it's time to question those religious institution attending, right wing Republicans to determine if they have any concept of individual rights. Or maybe it's unsettling for them to realize the Egyptians are a bit too similar to them when it comes to choosing how they want to live and the rest of the world be damned.
Why wouldn't Liberals and everyone else appreciate the fact the Egyptians got the chance to choose how to live?
This is the crux of the problem. Some folks think if a society/culture has the chance to experience democracy they will choose our way of life. How many times do they have to be shown such is not the case; be it the Palestinians or the Venezuelans or the Egyptians or.....? Is the goal to bring democracy to the world or is the goal to bring our way of life to the world using the word "freedom" as a proverbial Trojan Horse?

I'm not sure but I think Carter was the only fundamentalist President we've had, but Dubya did express similar tendencies.
Egypt's democracy isn't fashioned using the US ideal. I applaud the people and hope the people use their new-found power to improve their government and make it work.

Democracy is more than just one-man-one-vote. The people have to have a say in the policies of the government that effect their lives. Who do you think is going to have more control with the MB'hood in charge? The imams, or joe six-pack in Cairo? And don't hold your breath waiting for another "democratic" election, I'm betting that these goons are in it for the long haul just like Mubarak. Oh! Almost forgot, this Egyptian form of democracy depends on how much power the military decides to let this new government have. Kinda starts to look a lot less like "democracy" after awhile, don't it?
