I see it in the law all the time, very often decide that is not based in reality quickly loses.

Even if the public polls were not fiction (they are) we are in a time where everything can change in less than three days.

National polls have never been fiction but rather measured approximations of coming events. And there is no evidence the likelihood of Trump losing changed in the days before the 2020 election to the likelihood of Trump winning. As to that, incidentally, it is known that when Trump met with his advisers on the eve of the election he was told the outlook was "grim". The election then unfolded as predicted. The "fiction" in this case was the fever dream caught by you and so many others.
