Fear of Atheism

Seems that when people (even on JPP) have something more akin to fear of atheists than simple dislike.

There are posters on here who are, by their own admission, not necessarily dedicated to any faith but find atheism to be something worse than anything they can imagine. They can be accepting of all religions but when atheists show up they are compared to Stalin and Pol Pot.

Studies show repeatedly that atheists are among the least trusted people in American society. It's an interesting effect to realize that people are so irrational about their beliefs that the mere existence of someone who doesn't believe as they do causes undue consternation and anger. Just for existing and saying "Yeah, I don't think that I believe that".

But the weirdest part is the apparent FEAR people have of atheists. It's almost more of a knee-jerk reaction than a thought out position. Especially when one can justify the abject horrors many religions have unleashed on the world.

Strange.

Interesting think-piece on why people fear atheists. Apparently it is likely related to a fear of death which may be unique to humans or animals that are capable of conceiving of a future in which they don't exist.

Also atheists represent to those less capable members of society a direct threat to what they think their morality and ethics are based on. Obviously as we've seen elsewhere atheists are no such threats, and in fact the "believers" often commit some of the most egregious moral lapses often in the name of their "beliefs" but that is just my 2 cents.

But at an unconscious level, it seems that atheists threatens our beliefs about the nature of existence itself. They serve as a constant reminder of death by denying the presence of a supernatural power who regulates human affairs and monitors the gateway to immortality.

Of course, atheists are no less moral or trustworthy than their theistic counterparts. In light of these findings, we hope that perhaps believers might temper their contempt for atheists.

Seems that for one poster, merely questioning the veracity of the Gospels is considered "insulting". And that poster doesn't even think Jesus' teachings are worth his while.

Very strange what fear of atheism does to a person.

Do atheists believe life exceeds adapting to the moment here being alive as eternally separated in the moment now by series parallel positions as ancestrally displaced in plain sight?

I have never heard that from anyone besides myself saying it. if one understands how genetic compounding chromosomes sustains eternal separation of each and every reproduction native to this atmosphere why would they have to pick a side between evolution theory and creationism theology as both are inaccurate about the self evident time living now.

Atheists are repulsive. In the same way Jehovah's witnesses are - and for the exact same reason. Zealots who aggressively proselytize their faith. Fanatics who are shrill and demanding. Who wants to deal with that shit? Rude and obnoxious.

What atheists have been bothering you?

Since to my knowledge there has NEVER been a historic record of an "atheist" based group or country waging imperialistic/colonialist war against religious folk, I'd say they have the edge in the morals department.

That being said, the problem people have with atheism is the fear of non-existence. Atheist offer nothing beyond the oblivion that (according to them) awaits us all eventually. Religious folk have the opposite view. Throughout history and the world, you have people who claim to have the ability to communicate with "spirits", dead relatives, etc. There have been scientific documentaries using various devices to observe the hauntings, etc. I remember how Kirlian photography set the conversation ablaze among atheists, agnostics and religious folk.

So it's not that unreasonable to understand why most people disdain atheists, because the human body involuntarily strives to live. And being told that the cumulation of your life is "lights out" is not appealing.

Really?

You missed the entire USSR, Communist China, Khmer Rouge thing?

Hey, Atheists only murdered 200 million peace time civilians - I can see where you wouldn't notice.

The problem with Atheism is the insane amount of faith that is required to absolutely declare that there is nothing beyond the physical world.

It's really a matter of arrogance. Smug declaration by the atheist that they are the most intelligent and powerful entity in the universe.

So it's not that unreasonable to understand why most people disdain atheists, because the human body involuntarily strives to live. And being told that the cumulation of your life is "lights out" is not appealing.

Agnostics say much the same, as does traditional Judaism. But agnostics don't aggressively shove their views down you throat the way the zealots who are atheists do.

And Atheists have murdered more people than all the religions of the world combined over all of history have. That's a bit of a problem too.

That's called a RED HERRING lol. Show me ANY comment to backup your dumbass thread. It never seems to end, libtard morons like you make up shit to try and sound intelligent, I guess. I for one have no problem who believes what. My observations are that atheism or nihilism (same thing) results in the growth of bitterness and hate with age. I don't fear them, I pity them.

Who is proselytizing atheism to you? I think what you are experiencing is hearing an atheist speak. That probably scares you so badly you consider it "proselytizing".

I honestly don't care what you think about religion. Sorry. Unrepentant pricks who blather on about Jesus carry no weight in the discussion.

Yup that's it. It's the fear of non-existence. Atheism is a hard pill to swallow and I can understand why people would prefer the fantasy.

But even on here you have posters who fear atheist voices so much that any time an atheist speaks up they consider it "proselytizing". As if we don't have a President currently hawking bibles and a religious movement whose sole goal is to impose their "morality" on everyone.

Who is proselytizing atheism to you? I think what you are experiencing is hearing an atheist speak.

Not "speak," preach.

That probably scares you so badly you consider it "proselytizing".

Richard Dawkins is no different that Joel Olsteen. Both are preachers pushing faith in claims that have no support in fact.

Tell an atheist you are agnostic and you better be ready for an angry sermon.

Not "speak," preach.

Yeah, that isn't really a "thing". Compared to the non-stop proselytizing from the Commander in Chief hawking BIBLES or the Religious Right wiping out bodily autonomy for half the population because God told them to.

Tell an atheist you are agnostic and you better be ready for an angry sermon.

If I said you were something different from what you are in an attempt to downplay your actual experience I bet YOU'D be angry too. But you don't think that far or that deeply.

Those Bible are not forced on anyone. And as much as leftists hate democracy, returning the question of abortion to the people in the many states was the only Constitutional option.

If I said you were something different from what you are in an attempt to downplay your actual experience I bet YOU'D be angry too. But you don't think that far or that deeply.

I could never be an Atheist as I lack the deep faith to accept things absent any evidence.

There could be a god, or a hundred gods, or we could all be part of a simulation. I have no idea - there is no evidence to support OR REFUTE such ideas.

Those who claim to know, on both sides, are full of shit.

Those Bible are not forced on anyone.

Except for women in America who lost bodily autonomy in many states precisely because of Christian Taliban.

And as much as leftists hate democracy, returning the question of abortion to the people in the many states was the only Constitutional option.

No one wanted it back at the states. Anymore than we want the Second Amendment interpretted by states. Bodily autonomy should be a given.

I could never be an Atheist as I lack the deep faith to accept things absent any evidence.

You don't understand atheism. That sentence was exactly all I needed to hear to know that you don't know what the fuck you are talking about. Not even REMOTELY.

Wow. You sure are ignorant on the topic aren't you? Are you proud of your ignorance? Or is it just natural for you?

You keep chanting this lie.

How does restoring democracy "force bibles" on anyone?

Yes, you hate the idea of the people having rights - you want unelected Judges to make law for all. But how does restoring democracy force Bibles on anyone?

No one wanted it back at the states. Anymore than we want the Second Amendment interpretted by states. Bodily autonomy should be a given.

Well you sure didn't - democracy is anathema to the Stalinist democrat party.

How DARE the little people have a vote on issues that the party has already decided? Sieg Heil and Uber Alles democrat.

You don't understand atheism. That sentence was exactly all I needed to hear to know that you don't know what the fuck you are talking about. Not even REMOTELY.

LOL

Atheism is the belief that there is no god, can be no god or supernatural power.

It is irrational, unsupported by evidence, and based entirely on faith.

A foolish religion for foolish people who fancy themselves the ultimate beings in the universe.

Wow. You sure are ignorant on the topic aren't you? Are you proud of your ignorance? Or is it just natural for you?

Wow, ad hom with no substance.

You can't defend your religion. But Atheists tend to be morons, so this is no surprise.

I'll give you another chance, show evidence that supports the notion that there cannot be intelligent powers in the universe that would be considered gods?

You won't - because you can't.

You have no more evidence to support your religion than the Christians have to support their's.
