Fifty Years Ago -- 1968

Holy smoke. Great photos, owl.

I was just a little kid, but there are things I remember from 1968 which are etched permanently onto my neurons.

My father taking me to see "2001: a Space Oddessy'. Love the caveman scenes. I thought for sure we would have Moon bases and commercial space flight by now.

My mother taking me to see Planet of the Apes. Wow. Talk about blowing a little kid's mind.

The Apollo 8 mission. I think that was my first conscious experience with manned space flight, and I think that mission made me a space geek for the rest of my life. This photo from the Apollo 8 mission is absolutely iconic, and may have been a spark that led my brother - his inspiration - to working in the manned space flight program.

Oh yes... that photo. I believe that it was an impetus to the growing environmental movement that culminated with the first Earth Day -- and the creation of the EPA in 1970. Which was made law by a Republican president. I remember when Republicans valued science and saw it as an arrow in America's arsenal against those who would bring us low.

I really enjoyed this photo essay not only for the political stuff but also for the cultural things. The Supremes! One of my favorite groups ever! And Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. And that photo of the Beatles as the kids they were then, in the hollyhocks.

Yes, good point. The photo of the Earth from space - so fragile, so vulnerable - must have absolutely been a metaphor to the incipient environmental awareness that came of age in that era.

Great memories, eh?

I also have a visceral impression from those photos. There is both an innocence lost and a darkness both coexisting in photos from that era...an interesting juxtaposition of the light and the dark. And even though I was just a little kid, there is something about the late 1960s that continues to be a meaningful and pivotal thread to my past.

Is that when you became a fucking POS left-winger?

I was living in tangiers, morocco. I had just taken an overseas discharge in Germany in 67. Smoking opium laced hash and was living in the old quarter with jewish international dope smugglers. I was part of the group. One big happy family including a former swedish child movie star. She was raped by 5 arabs one time.

after they were finished with her they fell asleep and she blew them away with their own machine gun. Her name was "Rainbow'". You can read the story in my blogs at debate politics com. user name "liberal avenger".

BTW, honorable discharge, spec 5, with good conduct medal.

True stories.

I was banned there because I wanted to be banned. long story.
