Catholic Cardinal Authorized $20K To Pay Off Pedophile Priests, Then Railed Against ‘Immorality’ Of Gay Marriage

Archbishop-Timothy-Dolan-199x300.jpg

Cardinal Timothy Dolan has led the charge against same-sex marriage, describing gay and lesbian unions as “unjust,” “immoral,” and unnatural. “This is a very violation of what we consider natural law that’s embedded in every man and woman and we’re really worried as Americans that it’s going to be detrimental to the common good,” Dolan said in a radio interview in June, as New York prepared to legalize marriage equality. “[W]e still worry about the detrimental effect upon society, upon culture, and certainly upon our individual churches.”

But church documents showing that Dolan paid off priests who had been accused of sexually abusing minors suggest that the prominent Catholic leader was willing to overlook these very same religious convictions to help colleagues accused of egregious wrong doing. The documents, obtained by the New York Times, also show that Dolan lied to reporters when he initially dismissed news of the payments as “false, preposterous and unjust”:

Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York authorized payments of as much as $20,000 to sexually abusive priests as an incentive for them to agree to dismissal from the priesthood when he was the archbishop of Milwaukee. [...]

But a document unearthed during bankruptcy proceedings for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and made public by victims’ advocates reveals that the archdiocese did make such payments to multiple accused priests to encourage them to seek dismissal, thereby allowing the church to remove them from the payroll.

Dolan had described at least one payment to Franklyn Becker — who had been accused of abusing 10 minors — as “an act of charity” to help the priest “pay for health insurance.” This comes to light as Dolan and the Church are expanding their campaign against a government regulation that would increase health insurance coverage of contraception for women.

God only knows what he has been up to besides covering up for others. And no obviously not. He's a twisted bastard that is for sure.

The molestation scandal in the Catholic Church is an excellent example of an organization that is rotten from the top, down. The cover-up goes all the way to the Vatican. That's why it baffles me that any decent person who has a basic understanding of this fact would continue to attend and support the organization known as the Catholic Church.

I lapsed, and lapsed some more, and finally had to disgard the notion of a revelation God.
Walking around with sin, even my thoughts?
While i've done some "bad stuff" I don't realy consider myself an evil person. Just a flawed human being, like most of us.
The law of karma is more logical, places emphasis on the human life now -not some future salvation ( although there is the 'gateless gate).

Anyways, you've known me long enough - Buddhism works if you work it. Catholicism is all mystical ritualism, seems almost pointless

They love their faith, but hate the acts done and covered up in its name. It is like the USA and their wars of aggression, I love my country, but hate what the government has done in my name.

Do we have two Buddhists here now? Bonus!

Where do unto others could really come into play!
Jesus -the Son of God or the man -whatever you choose to beleive, did teach these thoughts, and they still are worthwhile.
I enjoy reading the New Testament, but there is much more. Not an expert or theologian, but i've heard it said about the Book of Thomas that Jesus was influenced by Buddhist thought.
Some even claim he was a Buddhist monk, his brother James "resurected", etc. It is beyond complicated. Fer Sure.

All this is interesting, but a goodwill towards other humans ( and the world and it's creatures) is really all you need.
I wish I had studied Buddhism more, i came to it late in life - but really (IMHO) all one needs is to "do unto others"... in the true sense, and you're on the right path.

The Catholic Church needs to clean up it's act, and get out of the Dark ages.

I have read several books that have suggested Jesus philosophies were heavily influenced by Far Eastern teachings.

There is so much evidence, it would take a theologian, and a bodhisattva, to sort it all out. The BBC did a good story on it. It's on U Tube
I'd post a U Tube - but don't know how to enbed. and it's like an hour long. You can google Jesus was a Buddhist monk, and scroll thru some ideas, but if you've read books on this -your knowledge already surpassed mine. And I don't want to hijack this thread anymore.
