Sedition Charge Filed Against Oath Keepers for Jan. 6 Capitol Riot
The rare sedition charge comes days after Attorney General Merrick Garland urged patience from Americans frustrated with the pace of the investigation into the Capitol riot.

"The Department of Justice has charged 10 members and the leader and founder of the Oath Keepers – a far-right militia group that played a key role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol – with seditious conspiracy, the Justice Department said Thursday.

"The indictment came Wednesday from a D.C.-based federal grand jury, the Justice Department said, and was unsealed Thursday, charging the 11 individuals with seditious conspiracy among other offenses related to the Jan. 6. breach of the U.S. Capitol.

"The rare seditious conspiracy charge alleges that “the defendants conspired through a variety of manners and means” including recruiting members, organizing paramilitary combat tactic trainings, bringing paramilitary gear, weapons and supplies onto Capitol grounds and attempting to take control of the Capitol building and grounds “in an effort to prevent, hinder and delay the certification of the electoral college vote.”"

They've been filed recently against other rioters. The charges in this case consisted of the same elements of insurrection but did not include insurrection itself, which defines the overall intent - namely to stop by force the lawful working of the national government. See The Washington Post today for an editorial suggesting the convictions in this case on the elements of insurrection may spell danger for Trump himself on a clear insurrection charge since it was he who riled them up for the assault and then sat back and watched it for three plus hours.
