Fossil energy harming the enviroment

Upton said that if governments took action now, and developed long-term views of these environmental problems, it would give them a much greater chance of avoiding the worst outcomes. “The key thing is that these four biggest problems are interconnnected – biodiversity is affected by climate change and land use, water is linked to health problems, for instance. You can’t solve any one of these in isolation. So to be effective, governments have to focus on all of these four and look very closely at the connections between them,” he said.

This is what is so frustrating about the Neocon/GOP. Each decade that slips by makes the evenualy need graver. Cheney sent the movement 10 years in the wrong direction.

Green car comparisons;

If you're looking at electric cars, then you'll almost certainly have some concerns for the environment as motivation. The good news starts here: With an EPA smog score of 10/10, zero greenhouse gas emissions and using the equivalent of only one barrel of oil to power over five years, the Leaf is an incredibly clean way to travel - and that's before you consider the lack of noise pollution too.

By now most of us have swapped our incandescent light bulbs for compact fluorescents or CFLs. I know I have, and have dramaticaly lowered my electric bills as a result.

The next wave of engery savings is LED or light emitting diodes, offering energy savings versus CFLs on the same scale as CFLs versus incandescents.

Initial fixture costs may be higher for some LED lighting solutions than for comparable incandescent and fluorescent lighting solutions. But initial fixture cost does not account for the total cost of owning, operating, and maintaining a lighting system. Because of their long useful life, LED lighting fixtures avoid the maintenance and materials costs which multiple relampings of incandescent fixtures require over tens of thousands of hours of operation. And because LEDs consume far less energy, annual power costs can be reduced by up to 80%.. The total cost of LED lighting systems, therefore, can be significantly lower than conventional systems. In fact, payback on LED lighting solutions can often be realized in less than three years.

I still have a few incandescent bulbs, we replaced our old roof and boiler in the last five years and that is where I have seen the huge savings on my electrical bill.

It is good to know those little things make a difference!

I replaced my oil fired boiler with a wood fired boiler in 2007. In five years I have used zero home heating oil, instead burning renewable firewood.
I get my firewood from tree services, these are all trees which were destined to die, regardless of whether I burned them or not. The tremendous amount of money I saved not burning oil has enabled me to re-insulate my house and replace poor sealing doors and windows, resulting in burning less wood.
Despite the fact that the wood I was going to burn was going to die anyway, I plant numerous seedlings each year to ensure that my use of firewood for heating is carbon-neutral.

For those interested in alternative home heating systems, I highly recomend this website; http://www.hearth.com/talk/
I have been a member for over 4 years.
