Phenomenon called refraction. The 'image' of the most visible 'horseman' is actually the refracted image of the fire in the left of the frame, and appears to move as the camera pans right.

True. However, Dix is rather knowledgeable about photography (at least I think I remember that), he may have some insight as to what caused the color gradation in the reflection.
