True. However, Dix is rather knowledgeable about photography (at least I think I remember that), he may have some insight as to what caused the color gradation in the reflection.

You see the same thing sometimes, when a camera catches the sun in the lens, but because of the intensity of the sun, that particular condition causes a trail of 'rings' repeated diagonally, this is because the 'reflection' is bouncing back and forth from one side of the glass lens to the other. In this instance, the 'source' of the refraction is not very strong, it's a fire, so there isn't much bouncing of the light inside the lens, and only one distinct 'ghost' is seen. The color differentiation is because the temperature of the reflected light is reduced considerably from the original source. As you can see in the example I posted, the same thing happens with the sun.. the refraction is a different color temp.
