People have always assumed he's conservative because being "anti gay" is primarily what he's about, and if you were going to choose an ideology that welcomed that "anti gay" sentiment, it would be conservatism, not liberalism.

His word doesn't teach against homosexuality. If anything, the majority of Christ's message is about tolerance & refraining from judgment.

My interpretation of this passage is the author is talking about people who once honored Yahweh and his teachings, but turned to paganism and pagan rituals. Taking part in the orgies of the temple. They were heterosexuals who during drunken orgies became involved in homosexual activity. It does not condemn homosexual love but paganism and those who worship false gods.
