Fracking is Our Future!

You're saying that fracking to supply fuel for gas fired generating stations is cheaper than hydro, wind, solar and tidal generation? Can you get me some real facts on that? I've been in the power industry for 45 years and I have never heard of anything like that. Fracking is dangerous. Texas is now experiencing earthquakes in places where earthquakes have never happened before and no explanation can be given for these recent ones. Fracking is a suspected culprit and with all the other serious problems it has, the main one being ground water contamination, it should be stopped immediately.

The biggest quake ever recorded in Texas was 4.6 on the Richter scale, near Snyder, in 1978. And guess what that quake was linked to? That’s right, a series of injection wells in the Cogdell oil field and that was so powerful that it cracked a few windows!! Are you going to stop oil drilling as well? I have never heard of any earthquakes connected to fracking that were ever more than about 2.5 on the Richter scale. I am sure that you know that the scale is logarithmic hence a 2.5 earthquake is a hundred times less powerful than a 4.5 one. Coal mining cause earth tremors, as we know in the UK, where there are regular occurrences of tremors caused by collapsing abandoned mine shafts.

Yeah, we've got a way to go, yet, on alternative energies. I hope that everyone here will invest in them, and make sensible choices which help them to develop enough so that they can eventually replace fossil fuels. Until then, I am not willing to wreck the world's economy over this silliness.

I love the way that the hippy dippy element on here consider anyone who has a grasp of the technical issues as an industry shill. I have worked in IT for 30 odd years and with T-Mobile for eleven years until I took voluntary redundancy but, and I know this damns me to hell, I have a degree in Chemistry so I must be a shill. I had never heard that word until fairly recently, where did it come from?

Dunno, but I have heard it for as long as I have followed politics. I guess since you have a degree in chemistry, idiots just assume that you worked on petrochemicals for the evil corporations, rather than in a different field, or a different side of chemistry...

I worked for Ilford Photographic, part of Ciba Geigy, when I left uni in the 70s but it soon dawned on me that there was far more money and opportunities in IT, even then.

If wind power is so cheap why does it always have to be subsidised?

I wish somone would make a break through and discover a way to make solar cells more efficient.
AZ has enough open land and more then enough days where power production would be more then necessary for the State.
Of course it would take vast amounts of land; but it would be possible.
My back yard alone would more then likely allow me to power my own needs and sell some back to the power company.

The low output of todays cells, just don't make it probable.

They are working on it, a decade from now it will be widely available. It's funny because when I was at uni many moons ago one of my third year projects was to synthesise and measure the magnetic properties of Ferrocene. It was considered very unusual and curious but had no practical uses yet now it is being used for solar cells!! I remember it well as I took my eye off the ball and the first batch I made started to get out of control and ended up everywhere, it was a real bitch to clean up as well!! Oh well happy days.

I believe that the average efficiency is about 20%, at this time.
It will only be really viable, when it hits 75%; in my opinion.

Wrong as usual. The 'hippy dippy element' considers anyone who sucks up to big oil and makes excuses for its most egregious offenses while downplaying the effects of those offenses, an industry shell. Only a shill or an apathetic turd would still be defending BP after the gulf disaster.

You're welcome.

Jesus, you would suck the living essence out of any situation, you must be a real joy to be around. Do you know what makes me laugh the most? I am probably the same distance from the Gulf as you are, yet you act as if the oil washed up outside your front door. I explained my viewpoint on BP but as usual you completely ignore that and go into a loony rant. If you showed anything like the same concern for the travesties created by US companies over the years then I might be more interested but it is the typical parochial rant that I thought the right had a near monopoly on. BP, Transocean, Cameron and Halliburton all fucked up in different ways but you only single out BP.

Oh. Well, if it isn't in my backyard, then I guess I shouldn't be disturbed by the mass destruction of livelihoods not to mention the eco-destruction. Silly me.

I only singled out BP because you singled out BP. I despise all of them. That BP was zeroed in on in conversation is because you stupidly defended them and repeated whole turds from their PR brochure about how 'culpable' they were for the disaster in the gulf.

Do you ever indulge in anything other than polemic and dogma? You will find that my viewpoint is fairly universal in the UK, it is seen over here as just another example of US employing double standards. Something happens on your own doorstep, or in your case 3000 miles away, and you are forever whining. Something happens abroad well who gives a shit!! If you don't like deepwater drilling then ban it and while you're about it ban fracking, nuclear, coal and everything else bar wind turbines. I hope you get a good supply of candles in!!
