Go back and watch the movie again; because you obviously were distracted when Fredo was telling his nephew that saying the Hail Mary's helped him to catch more fish.

Dude, read Mario Puzo's book. Al Neri was Michael's hit man (and Fredo knew that), as well as his body guard. Al replaced Luka Brazzi after Luka was killed by the Tataglia's. When Michael sent Al Neri to meet with you alone, it meant your ass and Fredo damned well knew enough about the family business to know this. When Michael called his son back in, Fredo knew he was going on a one way boat ride.

In the book that really fucked with Al Neri cause when ever he had done a hit before the victim had always cried or panicked or begged for mercy sometimes even crapping or wetting themselves. Fredo just ignored Al and calmly sat there repeating his hail Mary's. It was the bravest thing Al had ever seen. After he killed Fredo Al started drinking heavily.

Does the book say that Fredo knew he was going to be wached, in the boat; because unless it states so specifically, then this is just your take on this.
