[/h][h=2]Establishing a moon colony to extract minerals[/h]Mr. Gingrich loves the idea of establishing a lunar colony to exploit the moon’s mineral resources. Mitt Romney, Gingrich’s top challenger for the nomination, chose that as his top example of an area of disagreement with Gingrich at the Dec. 10 debate.

“I'm not in favor of spending that kind of money to do that,” said Mr. Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts.

Gingrich’s response: “I'm happy to defend the idea that America should be in space and should be there in an aggressive, entrepreneurial way.”

The former speaker mentioned moon colonies at a recent town hall meeting in Bluffton, S.C., when a student asked about working for NASA. But it’s not clear that Gingrich believes lunar colonies should be funded publicly. In the past, he has proposed cutting back on NASA and incentivizing private companies to offer space travel.

Preparing for an electromagnetic pulse attack

As laid out in The New York Times on Dec. 11, Gingrich is deeply worried about a phenomenon called the electromagnetic pulse – or EMP – and is making clear that as commander in chief, he would be prepared to confront it.

“The idea is that if a nuclear weapon, lofted by a missile, were detonated in outer space high above the American heartland, it would set off a huge and crippling shockwave of electricity,” the Times reported.

“Mr. Gingrich warns that it would fry electrical circuits from coast to coast, knocking out computers, electrical power and cell phones. Everything from cars to hospitals would be knocked out.”

In 2009, Gingrich wrote a sci-fi thriller that describes an imaginary EMP attack on the United States. Scientists quoted in the New York Times article call Gingrich’s real-life warnings far-fetched.

Firing certain judges

At a September forum organized by South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint (R), a tea party favorite, the GOP candidates talked about what they would change if elected president.

Gingrich went after the judiciary – a sure-fire hit with conservatives. He cited Thomas Jefferson and the Judicial Reform Act of 1802, which restructured the federal court system.

“I am not as bold as Thomas Jefferson,” Gingrich said.

Using space mirrors to light up the night sky

New York Times
columnist David Brooks recently noted, in an unflattering way, Gingrich’s support for an idea to install, as Brooks put it, “a mirror system in space [that] could provide the light equivalent of many full moons so that there would be no need for nighttime lighting of the highways.”

The fact-checking website Politifact looked into whether Gingrich actually ever advanced the idea.

It found this: a Gingrich recap of a 1979, NASA-sponsored “new concepts” symposium in Woods Hole, Mass., where 30 experts brainstormed ideas for NASA.

Politifact quotes Gingrich’s 1984 summary of the idea, which he treated approvingly: "The climate group at the Woods Hole conference suggested that a large array of mirrors could affect the earth’s climate by increasing the amount of sunlight received by particular areas, citing recent feasibility studies exploring the possibilities of preventing frosts in Florida or enabling farmers in high altitudes to plant their wheat earlier.

"A mirror system in space could provide the light equivalent of many full moons so that there would be no need for nighttime lighting of the highways. Ambient light covering entire areas could reduce the current danger of criminals lurking in the darkness. Mirrors could be arranged to light given metropolitan areas only during particular periods, so there would be darkness late at night for sleeping."

At Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government last month, Gingrich put forth an idea that he said would “fundamentally change the culture of poverty in America”: fire most school janitors, and put kids to work cleaning so they can build a work ethic.

“It is tragic what we do in the poorest neighborhoods, entrapping children in, first of all, in child laws, which are truly stupid,” Gingrich said.

He continued: “I tried for years to have a very simple model. Most of these schools ought to get rid of the unionized janitors, have one master janitor and pay local students to take care of the school."

Using geo-engineering to combat global warming

On Wednesday, Romney released a web video highlighting the ad Gingrich made in 2008 with then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calling for action on global warming.

Oh, how times have changed. Gingrich has since backed away from asserting that manmade global warming is real. But just three years ago, he was promoting a process known as geo-engineering to combat it.

“Geo-engineering holds forth the promise of addressing global warming concerns for just a few billion dollars a year,” Gingrich said in 2008...

Putting children in orphanages

Back in 1994, when welfare reform was a hot topic, incoming House Speaker Gingrich raised eyebrows with a radical idea.

He suggested that states cut payments to large numbers of aid recipients and put their children in orphanages or group homes funded by the savings.

Gingrich said that welfare programs promote a "counterculture value system" and "ruin the poor," The New York Times reported.

Palestinians an “invented” people

Gingrich says he supports the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel as part of a peace deal.

But when he asserted recently that he believes the Palestinians are an “invented” people, he placed himself outside the mainstream of thought in the international community, including Israel’s conservative prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

And Gingrich is not backing away from his assertion. He first made the comment Dec. 9 on a Jewish cable channel, and then doubled down at the Dec. 10 GOP debate.

“Is what I said factually correct? Yes."
