A grandfather checking on his neighbor is shot and killed by Fort Worth police. Those close to the family say the victim lived nearby and heard his neighbor’s burglar alarm. Neighbor Jerry Wayne Waller then apparently went outside to see what was going on.

The 72-year-old man didn’t even make it to the house across the street before he was shot. He died on his own property.

The neighbors in the Woodhaven Country Club area and generally know each other pretty well. Becky Haskin, a former Fort Worth City Councilmember, lives in the area and said she believes Waller, “…was doing what neighbors do probably checking on the neighbor that the alarm went off.”

The elderly man, who was armed at the time, was shot and killed in his own driveway by police responding to a burglary call. “We heard five shots,” Haskin recalled. They were just rapid fire one after the other.”

Speaking on the incident Fort Worth police Cpl. Tracey Knight said, “Officers felt threatened by the man with the handgun and he was shot.”

After the shooting Haskin said, “The police officers were sobbing uncontrollably and very distraught.”

For the normally quiet and quant neighborhood, Waller’s death is devastating. Neighbors say he and his family have always been very involved in the community. “They are just a nice retired couple, that loved working in their yard, having family over, and grandkids,” Haskin said. CBS 11 News has been trying to get more answers from Fort Worth police. The official response has primarily been that the shooting is “an ongoing investigation.”

CBS 11 has learned that the two officers involved were not hurt and have been placed on administrative leave.

Fort Worth Police Chief Jeff Halstead released the following statement regarding the shooting:

“The events that took place the early morning hours on May 28th will require a significant amount of investigative effort; however, we remain committed to working with our residents and making this process efficient and transparent.

I ask for your patience, your understanding, and most importantly, your prayers for all involved.”

why the fuck is there all this sympathy for two incompetent cops and none for the family of this man who was executed for being a good and decent neighbor?????

I'll go you one 20 years worse.

Ms Johnson, a tragic and sad story. at least those cops were held accountable.

Are they on death row? Then they're not being held accountable (disregard if they actually are).
they are not on death row.
Jason R. Smith, 36, of Oxford, Ga., was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison; Gregg Junnier, 42, of Woodstock, Ga., was sentenced to 6 years in federal prison; and Arthur Tesler, 42, of Acworth, Ga., was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison. There is no parole in the federal system. Each defendant was also sentenced to serve 3 years of supervised release following his prison term, and collectively to pay $8,180 in restitution for the costs of Johnston’s funeral and burying.

just so the penis envying cops could carry their manhood with impunity????

I know I should make sure there aren't any police around during any of my daily activities, lest one of them shoot me for doing nothing on my own property. Because that's the true meaning of freedom, a constant fear of the police.

Better than nothing I guess.

The family of 73-year-old Jerry Wayne Waller, the homeowner shot and killed by at least one Fort Worth police officer early Tuesday morning, issued a statement Wednesday afternoon.

In the statement, the family said the Fort Worth Police Department has been misrepresenting details of the incident to the media and they are calling for an independent investigation of what led to the fatal shooting.

Waller was shot and killed early Tuesday morning after he went outside to investigate bright lights outside of the bedroom, his wife Kathy told NBC 5 on Tuesday evening.

Armed with a .38-caliber pistol, Waller was apparently shot several times in his rear-facing garage after some sort of miscommunication with police officers.

Officials with the Fort Worth Police Department said officers were in the neighborhood responding to an alarm call; but that call was to a home across the street from the Waller residence.

Kathy said officers told her they thought the alarm call came from her residence.

Very true good brother.

But think of all those who walk away free.

Think of a life of seeing that happen for years and tears and fears and years. Cops brutally murdering innocent people who are helpless to defend themselves against them .. and seeing them walk away free .. often to applause.

Think about the horror of that. Think about how that horror affects the lives of those who witness it.

I think about it all the time. It's why I post so many stories of misconduct on here. too bad most of those on here still idolize and worship their 'saviors'.

I don't care about those who worship them .. I care that you take the time to post your heart about these horrors .. something that I've noticed about you and I want to take a moment to sincerely thank you brother.

It's one thing if I say it .. it's something else if you say it.

Thank you.

Of course common sense says don't go outside while carrying a gun if the police are on alert and conducting a search for a suspect at night in your neighborhood.

Unfortunately, common sense isn't very common place when it comes to gun nuts and their surrogate manhood.

And now comes the obfuscatory attempts by the family of another "responsible gun owner" to blame others for the actions of the idiot who thought he'd help the cops shoot up some bad guys.

despite your penis envy, most people don't know that there are already cops searching in the neighborhood. common sense would dictate that you know this. since zappa has no common sense though and seems to be jealous of men......
