George Gascón, Los Angeles’ embattled progressive prosecutor, loses reelection bid

They say as California goes, so goes the nation. Being on the right, I'm always fascinated (locally) to see how much liberals will accept. George Cascon was a progressive prosecutor who lost on Tuesday. In San Francisco we recalled our progressive prosecutor and replaced him (a white male) with a black/latino Democrat who has been much more aggressive in going after criminals. And in Alameda County (Oakland) they just recalled the progressive DA, Pamela Price.

These progressive DA's get elected on platforms claiming we need more racial justice in the law, more rehabilitation instead of prisons, hold cops accountable etc. But once the real world kicks in, crime increases and people feel unsafe - even those who proclaim themselves progressive have a tipping point on how much they'll accept. On crime it seems people in LA, SF and Oakland have reached that point (for the moment).

George Gascón, Los Angeles’ embattled progressive prosecutor, loses reelection bid

Gascón is part of a string of West Coast district attorneys who have faced backlash from voters.

George Gascón, who rode a criminal justice reform wave after George Floyd’s murder to become the Los Angeles County District Attorney, has lost his reelection bid, according to The Associated Press.

The progressive prosecutor was defeated handily by Nathan Hochman, a Republican-turned-independent former tax attorney.

Gascón came into office in 2020 promising to turn back the county’s history of lock ‘em up law enforcement. He ended cash bail, declined to seek the death penalty and halted the use of sentencing enhancements, a position he partially rolled back over time.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic crime spike, however, these policies sparked instant controversy. Opponents launched two recall attempts, both of which failed to qualify for the ballot. He attracted a slew of challengers in his reelection race; Hochman, the best fundraiser of the pack, emerged as his challenger.

Hochman ran to Gascón’s right, though he refrained from making his campaign a larger referendum on criminal justice reform.

I think lots of things reached the “tipping point” for a lot of people in this election. I was floored when I woke up Wednesday to what had happened. We’ll see how things go as time progresses. Is very curious as to how Trump and the conservatives elected will govern. Where will/can they emphasize law and order…a big mantra from his last campaign? Where will/can they make changes to improve the economy? What imports are they planning to put tariffs on? So many things we will have to wait and see about. But one thing seems clear, we have seen how much the populace is willing to accept before they switch the sides they’re going to push from. I simply cannot believe Trump won.

First time I've noticed you've gone from conservative Democrat to moderate Republican. Congrats, you went from a DINO to a RINO in partisan speak! Hahaha. :)

California also passed Prop 36 to increase punishment for theft (which has been such a huge problem). I don't know if there is correlation here between liberals getting fed up with crime (even if they still voted for Harris) and Trump winning. DA's are of course a local thing and 100% focused on crime vs. the Presidency where crime can be one of many factors influencing a vote.

This country ebbs and flows (at least for President) between the two parties. In my lifetime there's been that one 12 year Reagan-Bush run but other than that 8 years max for each party before we switch.

Harris was not a good candidate but agreed, shocked Trump won.

Democrats have been burdened with their progressive wing’s pull to recognize positions the right would stereotype as woke. This allows Republicans to demagogue issues. It is a reality Democrats are just beginning to recognize

We got a new mayor in SF. By SF standards our current Mayor London Breed is a moderate. And she was replace by Daniel Lurie, also a moderate who has never held political office.

And while we still unbelievably have two (Democratic) socialists on our board (although they are still counting votes for one of them) the Board seems to have gone more moderate (again, by SF standards).
