Gold bars stashed in Dem senator's home recovered after 2013 violent robbery

The two cases have major differences.

First of all, Santos was an embarrassment to the GOP. He told the most preposterous and absurd lies imaginable to get elected, then used campaign money to finance his "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" fantasies.

And none of that is in serious dispute.

Menendez OTOH, has enough of a plausible explanation for where the large amounts of cash came from, that he deserves a chance to make his case in a court of law prior to any punishment by Congress.

The right's attempts at drawing a false equivalence are as usual, lame and weak upon scrutiny.
Menendez needs to go. He's a filthy criminal who had a hung jury in his first trial.

He's a foreign operative who's gotten too comfy in the Senate.

He exemplifies everything that's wrong with the majority of our legislators. Democrats and Republicans.

If he's found guilty, he will absolutely go.

But his case is still different than Santos.

Santos was just flaunting his guilt in the public's faces. He was pretty much daring the rest of the House to do something. Why? I don't know but maybe because the GOP's majority is so thin, he may have felt they'd never expel him.

At any rate, I don't see a double standard here.

Did you notice Santos was not impeached he was expelled. Did the Senate have a 2/3rds vote or ANY vote on Santos NO SIR THEY DID NOT! The Senate can expel Menendez without impeachment by the House.

Hey Neighbor, you do know your Government 101! :good4u:

Well now that we have a new precedent to work with, perhaps the Senate Republicans will now like to use it to expel the foreign agent Menendez out of Congress. A tally of over half the Democratic Senators has called for the expulsion of Menendez. So, will there be 49 Republican Senators willing to use the new precedent to oust a Senator? I don't think so, but...

Schumer needs to have a vote count to find out. We will have to see. You know Schumer, as he never brings anything to the floor unless it has a chance of passing!

I do not know why all of these Democrat and Republican Senators has this idea that a Senator may not be expelled unless he is convicted in Court.

Most Senators of the past has stepped down, and made the Senate's job easy. But Menendez is crazy and like TRUMP is claiming he is Innocent.

But that is what has been holding this thang up!

Ask your Senator- WILL YOU EXPEL MENENDEZ BEFORE HE HAS BEEN CONVICTED?

Expulsion is a political act, just like impeachment is. It doesn't require a conviction to be done. The House or Senate can do it simply because the member has brought discredit on the body such that they have disgraced themselves sufficiently to warrant expulsion.

I agree. I typed an in depth response, and got a database error message when I hit post.

Didn't feel like going through it again.

I did mention that he's gone anyway. He won't win in November.

True. And in this case, unlike the House, the Democrat governor will appoint a Democrat to fill the seat until November.

Menendez doesn't hurt Dems with the way he votes, but he's a major security risk.

I believe he was stripped of his committee assignments. He should also be blocked from getting intel reports.

Schumer will not hold the vote because he knows Menendez would be expelled. It would be 49/49 until Menendez was replaced.

The problem is that it sets a dangerous precedent. What happens if the Dems get a 2/3rd margin then they could throw someone out because they don't like how he parts his hair no crime necessary. The same goes for a 2/3rd GOP margin.

Menendez, who has never been to Cuba, claimed that stashing hundreds of thousands in cash/gold in his home is a 'habit'.

Because in Cuba the govt. comes and takes your money.

That's Santos material right there.

Yes, the Santos calamity has proven that they can Sir! This established a new precedent.

But will they? That is the question! And this ain't the HOUSE! The House definitely would, as we have witnessed!

Right now we have a few over 25 Democratic Senators that say they will- WHAT HAVE THE REPUBLICANS GOT?

Not all 49 of them are going to vote yes! And I do not know about the 3 independents.

We need 75 votes!

Schumer is Democratic all the way. When the majority of Democrats want something he has never failed to act.

But, also he never brings anything to the floor unless he knows it will pass.

So it will require all 49 of the Republican Senators to convince him they will say yes. And maybe one or more independent out of that 3.

But here is what is up! There are likely as many Republican Senators, as Democratic Senators, that do not like the precedent that the House set just last week. SO good luck!

Let's see what happens next week as the pressure is certainly on from the House to get Menendez ousted- being led by Fetterman of all people!

Nope we only need 66 votes. 30 dems have called for Menendez to resign. I would expect we could find 36 Republicans that would be glad to see him get the boot.

Menendez is not going to step down and walk away from his government check before he has to. Schumer won't call a vote so Menendez will not go anywhere till 2025. We are stuck with him.

To be fair, I think what Menendez said, was that he picked that up from his parents, who DID live in Cuba.

Parents pass on a lot of habits to their offspring.

I can see this POSSIBLY being the case with him.

Seems like he would have hidden it better, though.

Like maybe had a safe installed, concealed under the concrete slab of the house inside of a storage closet or something.

Buried in a sealed plastic tub under the garden by the back fence.

There are no bank records of him regularly withdrawing the money. And his life style and reported income are not consistent with him having that kind of money.

I am not giving up, as I know Schumer to be a very persuasive and influential man.

Here is what I say, I ask what is more important- sucking up to an old out of date snoberish precedent- or realizing that we have a man sitting in Congress that has been accused of being an agent for Egypt- that we already know is a crook?

Trust me, Schumer knows the danger of this, and wants the shyster scalawag to be gone as much as anyone.

I agree. I actually look for this to happen. By the time MEET THE NATION rolls around Sunday, and the fever is pitched even higher, more Democrats and Republicans will be on board!

But, then Sunday Night Football comes on and everybody puts this back on the back burner.

BECAUSE THIS HERE IS THE DALLAS COWBOYS AND THE PHILLY EAGLES! :whoa::laugh:

First things first yanno'?

I'm scared they may be pissed off after losing.

How Menendez squiggled out of his last legal matter was beyond me.

He must think he is invincible like Donald Trump!
