GOP struggles with young voters due to culture, demographics

You have two things going on. There's a culture gap between where young people are on a lot of issues, whether it's abortion, reproductive rights issues, whether it's LGBT issues," Cox, research director at the Public Religion Research Institute, told Hill.TV's Joe Concha on "What America's Thinking."

"Then you also have this demographic shift. So every year, young people are getting more or less white. So they're increasingly African-American, Latino, [Asian Pacific Islander], and Republicans don't do well among those groups," he continued.

Red Hats, White Socks and Shorts just ain't the fashion it use to be.

Cracker Chic just don't sell anymore ...

Republicans really only do well with people that work for a living and have families to support.

I would suggest that the Republican party are going to make the needed adjustment after Trump is taken out of the equation. But really, both parties have to be rejected as failures for the people.

I don't think the young people are of the mindset to be able to understand how the American way has no promise for their futures. The best they can understand is a partial remedy in making education affordable. That's about 1/1000 of the solution that's needed.

Surprisingly, the older politicians such as Bernie and Trump caught on first. (Trump lied of course) They both saw the distinct possibility of revolution in the cards and reacted to it.

Repbulicans have never done well with younger people, they represent a traditional, largely rural, conservative voice that has never appealed to any youth.

Keep in mind that as people age they mature and lose their idealism, and that is when some see the Republicans in a different light. In addition, it is those older Republicans who vote, the youth vote isn't consistent, and really needs a candidate or cause to motivate it

Where the Republicans blew it was not going after the Latin vote, it is largely religious and family oriented, which was a tag of the GOP prior to Trump, if Republicans hadn't been so obstinate about immigration reform they could have gained a considerable segment of that vote

Just as a side note, Bernie didn't catch it first, he has always been what he is, there's no political facades, he has always been Bernie, it is just that the younger generation started to notice

On this I agree with you. There is enough in common that Republicans would have some appeal. This is anecdotal but some of my in-laws relatives are Mexican and it's interesting talking to them because it showed Hispanics are not monolithic in either their politics or thoughts (outside of California). Those who have been here for multiple generations can have different views than those who are more recent arrivals. Those whose family came legally can have different thoughts than those who didn't. We, as Republicans, have ourselves to blame for not doing better with Hispanic voters.

That's not true, look at early immigration from Cuba and the Caribbean, they became Repbulican in South Florida, Rubio is a product of that development, the GOP could have continued the trend but they their obstinateness in immigration reform branded them as the anitLatin party

When Boehner killed the Gang of Eight legislation in 2012 that sailed thru the Senate the GOP lost its last chance to appeal to Latin voters

You are correct, that did happen. They believed the lies of the racist right and along with the cheating, that was a recipe for disaster. Now they can't buy a vote from Latinos.

Every thing the right is doing is coming to light.

The demographic change will move the nation to the center and a bit to the populist left.

Montgomery has the gist of it is the standard. The opposite, the wrong, are voiced by PmP and Boris and Dark Soul,

I don't think Bernie could have laid aside his loyalty to the system enough to be the drive behind the needed change. The people gave Trump a shot at it but they were betrayed. Has the entire hope in the new movement been defused for a few years? I don't see anything in the wind for the next election so far. Far too much for Ocasio-Cortez to accomplish as a relative newcomer.
