Rape is about violence and power. She believed that because the guy was "put down" for so long that was his way of gaining some control.
Rather than her internalizing it she is seeing it from a bigger perspective.
For example, a person may be violently mugged. They end up in counseling or turn to drink/drugs because they believe they had something to do with it. They believe it happened to them because of something they did or that they deserved it. They internalize or personalize it.
That's when psychological problems arise. The person has to realize it wasn't personal. They were at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Whether the event in question had to do with "Whitey" or not the way she is handling it is psychologically beneficial.
