Soon-to-be Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) is being pressed by taxpayer groups to slash the salaries of House lawmakers.

Cutting member pay would show voters the new GOP majority in the House is going to lead by example in their efforts to rein in spending and start with their own wallets, say officials with three prominent taxpayer advocacy groups in Washington, D.C.

Thats is just too too kool.....

Greatest idea since sliced bread....

We shall see what he does before I sign on to the koolness of it...

Perfect. Let's attract more rich people who don't need the money into Congress.

This is purely symbolic BS. I'd prefer to see someone talking about cutting the military budget in a big way....

Oh, come ON!! Are you really that stupid? They make 170K/yr. They can cut that in half and still be 60% above median income. Can't live off 85K/yr, you sure as hell don't deserve to be making laws effecting our economy.

Besides, what's wrong with it if they DO have to support themselves? They want to pass laws affecting OUR finances, then why the hell should WE pay for that? Sure, they tell us to pay for a few entitlement programs and a congressional trip to Bangkok, then we pay for those highly needed government expenses. But why the hell should we pay THEM for the privilege of telling US what to spend our money on?

Let those who want to act like king frog pay for their little aberrations.

try having to maintain two households, one of them in dc

plus travel costs between home and dc

also, they have to raise millions to get elected to a job that pays 170k/yr

what is wrong with this picture

They get allowances for maintaining premises away from their home state, for travel to and from their home state, to maintain an office in their home state, meal expenses, etc. etc. etc.; and that is on top of all the other perks from received from "grateful constituents".

They could cut their official salary to zero and still make more than most of us do.

Don't forget their amazing health benefits and pension. These people don't need our sympathy.

The amount of money "saved" by cutting pay for 500 people is probably a hundredth of the cost of a single bomber. This is just populist vote grabbing with no real effect. John Boehner should be sentenced to death for treason.

Yeah, because there are so many employees that pay their own business related travel expenses and pay rent for their office. I would totally work for nothing more than the price of the costs I incur in doing my job.

If every idiot populist who can't shut up about the fact that congresspeople have a salary would spend the time the spend whining about it finding pennies on the street and sending them in instead we'd probably have 1000x times the entire salary of congress.

So let's just take all local; state; and federal workers and freeze salaries and pensions for 3 years across the board the way a private company would do to get over the "hump".

Act like a private company? Let's raise congressional pay to 10 million a year then. Actually 20 million to reward them for the company not doing so well. And if they get voted out they get a 100 million dollar severance package.
