Greek Athelete Kicked Out Of Olympics After Racist Tweet

The Greeks are not protesting this, in fact they have banned all the rest of the team from using social media till after the Olympics.

Good for them. Had they made a stink about it, the remarks tweeted would have reflected despicably on the country as a whole.

Africans... from Africa... consisting of a wide variety of skin pigmentation (despite howey's racist view that they are all black)
Mosquitoes... carrying West Nile virus (from Africa)...

Says they will get to eat homemade food... African Mosquito eating African people (again Howey the racist... they have a very wide variety of pigmentation)

Howey... 'That racist!!!'

while there is a wide variety of pigmentation among africans, the vast majority are negroid

i take the comment on the spirit it was offered

Is every black person at the Olympics from Africa? No. Nor are the mosquitos.feasting on just blacks.

She made a comment based upon ignorance and stereotypes, which is the heart of racism.

What are you talking about? She didn't even reference anything you mentioned above, or blacks at all.

Please...

Once again, I'm going to do something those of you on the right don't.

Admit I was wrong. I was reading the post on my notsosmart phone and rushing. At first glance, I thought she was talking about blacks at the Olympics.

She's referring to African migrant workers in Greece, both black and other groups from Africa. Mimicking the far right party of her nation, it was a xenophobic and racist diatribe based upon her ignorance and lack of knowledge.

These people are Greece's version of our undocumented hispanics. Used and abused for decades to do the work nobody else would do, they are now being blamed for everything that's wrong with the country by the extreme right wing, of which this woman belongs.

"The police, they just catch us for nothing. Life is very difficult here for us," said Rasul, a young immigrant from Bangladesh, gesturing at two policemen strolling down the crowded street, seemingly oblivious of the illegal petty trade and the undocumented immigrants.

Migrants, especially those with a different skin colour, are caught in tough situation in Greece: even more vulnerable to economic pressures than the rest of the population and also increasingly being targeted by violent, extreme right-wing groups that thrive on the desperation that comes with growing poverty.

In all actuality, her bigotry is worse than I thought...

I think you have this all wrong, there has been a huge influx of illegal immigrants to Europe from Africa via Turkey and Greece. They used to get in via Spain but they cleaned up their act and now they go to the weakest point which is the port of Piraeus.

What do I have wrong? I posted a link to the story as well as a video. I understand there's other immigrant problems, but they are irrelevant to this particular case.

In the article I read there were other tweets, which along with this one which when put together made her statement racists.

" Twitter account ((at)papaxristoutj) contained several retweets and links to sites and YouTube videos promoting the views of Golden Dawn, a formerly marginal extreme right party that entered the Greek Parliament in two recent elections – in May and June – by polling almost 7 percent of the vote. She has since erased those links and retweets from her account."

If it's not exactly racism, it's certainly bigoted, given the Golden Dawn's position. They sound nasty to the extreme.

"Members of Golden Dawn have been accused of carrying out acts of violence and hate crimes against immigrants, political opponents and ethnic minorities.[54]""

"The committee's reference to "statements" is most likely her other tweets encouraging her 7,253 followers to support Golden Dawn, a far-right, Greek extremist political party with ties to neo-Nazism, facism, nationalism, and politically-inspired violence. In the May 2012 elections, the party ran with the slogan "So we can rid this land of filth"- possibly referring to their anti-immigrant stance."

Is it worthy of being kicked off the Olympic team over?

Immigration is a huge issue in Greece at the moment, she was wrong to make the tweet and should have been censured over it. Being kicked off the team all together though is just too harsh..
