TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The gift of a gun may be high on many Floridians' holiday shopping lists.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement says it is on target to conduct nearly 1 million background checks this year on private firearm purchases. The projection comes as the department is reporting a record number of reviews conducted over the Thanksgiving weekend that typically kicks off the year-end holiday shopping season.

"We have definitely seen an increase in the number of background checks over the past several years," FDLE spokeswoman Samantha Andrews said Monday. "You can see November and December are relatively larger" for sales.

Andrews declined to speculate on the reason for the increase and said the checks are only conducted on the individuals making purchases.

National Rifle Association lobbyist Marion Hammer said that in addition to buying firearms as gifts, guns sales have grown due to the improved economy and an effort by merchants to move stock by offering enticing holiday sales.

"I think it's a combination of people wanting to take advantage of sales as well as the gift giving," Hammer said. "The retailers I talked to ... they feel the economy may be starting to recover, or
people are relaxing a little more, and are starting to turn loose some of the money they were reluctant to spend. And it's that time of year."

The FDLE recorded approximately 823,000 checks on firearms purchases as of Dec. 15, of which about 40,000 were from December. Last December, the department recorded more than 110,000 checks.
The 2013 number already surpasses the 797,000 background checks conducted in 2012. There were roughly 610,000 checks conducted in 2011.

Each check includes criminal history and mental-health database reviews.

Nothing says Merry Christmas like a new gun under the tree.

Hammer gets it all wrong with such NRA prattle; the reason sales are up is because American sheeple see the pronounced efforts of the brain dead left and their media allies to ignore our Constitution and ban guns.

It's called insurance. I did the same thing last year around November after Obummers re-election.

So basically, thanks to Obummers Marxist class envy message, the only people benefitting from his moronic political brinksmanship are fat and happy Wall Street Bankers and gun dealers. Meanwhile jobs continue their disappearing act and young blacks see the highest unemployment rates in recent memory; hail Obummer!!

I am not sure if this is anything new. I know guns given as gifts at Christmas time have been very common among the people where I live. There have been record gun sales in the US the past 3 or 4 Christmases and it is very likely for a number of reasons. One of my sophomores got an AR-15 for Christmas this year. His dad built it and customized for him. I gave my son a 410 for Christmas when he was 7 and gave him a 22 when he turned 9. Before anyone goes nuts on me, I keep them in a safe and right now he only gets to use them under my supervision. He's free to wreak havoc with his pellet gun on his own though.

They don't accept Chalmettians there you poor uneducated coonass

Stop lying

Tell me again how you bought $300,000 of Apple and lost $62,500.

I love that story

If I was a member of your family I'd want a gun for Christmas too!

Guns are great, but you really need to buy up ammo, and if the sheet hits the fan, they will stop all ammo sales like LA County did during the Rodney King Riots. I remember some gang members saying on a live television street camera that next time, they will be going out to the suburbs to "Burn Baby Burn"(BBB). I also remember people lined up at Signal Hills Andrews Sporting Goods, (later Turner's Outdoorsman) trying to buy a self defense gun, and being told that they had a ten day waiting period before they could get a gun.
