Habeas Corpus Restoration Act needs your voice!

ViolaLee

We are not amused
I got this email from Senator Patrick Leahy today. He's trying to restore our constitutional rights but the Republicans are threatening to filibuster. (Remember when the Republicans whined and screamed about the Dems threatening to filibuster for the past 6 years? Pretty funny). So if you'd like to see our constitution restored to it's original glory, please call your Senators, as Mr. Leahy is asking us to do. The vote could be tomorrow, so this is an urgent request. The Senate needs us to speak up for our rights.

Yesterday, we wrote to you about our Habeas Corpus Restoration Act which is currently being debated on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Thanks so much to the thousands of you who have already signed on as citizen co-sponsors, helping us build momentum for this critical legislation!

Unfortunately, a number of Republican Senators are once again trying to block our efforts by threatening to filibuster our amendment.

There's going to be a vote on the bill that could come as soon as Wednesday -- that's tomorrow -- to try to beat back their filibuster, and we'll need 60 votes to do it.

Help us end the Republican filibuster of our Habeas Corpus Restoration Act. Click here to call your Senators now!

As of right now, we're just a handful of votes away from the 60 votes we need to overcome the Republican filibuster.

That's where you come in. We've developed an online tool to help you call your Senators, urge them to support the Habeas Corpus Restoration Act, and then report back on where they stand so we can track our progress towards 60 votes.

This is people-powered democracy at its finest -- and we need your help to make it work.

Help us end the Republican filibuster of our Habeas Corpus Restoration Act. Click here to call your Senators now!

The Habeas Corpus Restoration Act gives us a chance to reverse one of the Bush Administration's many assaults on our civil liberties, help restore our place in the world, and better secure our nation.

A vote to break the Republican filibuster could come as soon as Wednesday morning -- so please help us restore habeas corpus rights by calling your Senators now!

Your phone calls could make the difference between victory and defeat. We urgently need your help.

Sincerely,

Patrick Leahy Chris Dodd
U.S. Senator U.S. Senator

P.S. It will just take a minute or two -- but it's extremely important. Please click here to call your Senators, urging them to support the Habeas Corpus Restoration Act -- and then report back with the results of your call. Thanks so much for your help!

Great point. lol

There's only three things that get me mad: theocracy, socialism (whether its my country or not), and lukewarm coffee.

I wrote this to Voinovich:

"Please vote to restore habeas corpus. I feel that holding detainees without allowing them the ability to challenge the legitimacy of why they are being held to be against what the United States is about. We can never win the War on Terror if we create more terrorists by not staying true to our American values of freedom. We need to lead by example, and not let fear control policy."

That's really great Dave.

Nice work people, but the amendment failed. The Republicans, once again, blocked the amendment by filibuster. The amendment failed to get the 60 votes needed to invoke cloture, 56-43.

Let me know if you see the word "filibuster" in any media accounts. Strangely, the word filibuster seems to only be used when the Democrats are in the minority. When Republicans do it, the word is rarely, if ever, used.

They'll never freakin listen to the people who have been right! I swear they all have their heads up their asses and think the shit smells good.

Voinovich is being a prick about this issue as well as the Iraq War. I used to respect him much more than I do today. He was once a Fiscal Budget Hawk and a wonderful governor, now he's lowered himself to an ignorant senator, dealing with National issues that he doesn't seem to understand. He was better at just running the state.

What's in the law?

This is the email I just sent to Domenici

Dear Senator Domenici,

For the last 6 years I have heard politician after politician tell the Ameican public that "9-11 changed everything" and sadly sir I believe this is true. I believe that after 9-11 both politicians and the general public found it too easy to ignore prinicipals of American justice and due process all in the name of "feeling secure". I know that Ben Franklin's statement that ""Those who would sacrifice essential liberties for a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety" has become little more than a truism, but it is something that I believe all Americans must take to heart.

Just recently, members of the United States Senate have introduced the Habeas Corpus Restoration Act. This law, if passed would go along way to showing the entire world that we will not sacrifice our essential liberties, nor will we turn our back on a long standing and vital part of the framework of American freedom and justice. Thomas Jefferson said in his letter to A.H. Rowan that "The Habeas Corpus secures every man here, alien or citizen, against everything which is not law, whatever shape it may assume." Senator I urge you as one of the people of New Mexico you have served so well for these many years to show the world that 9-11 did not change everything, it did not change the way we feel about freedom, justice and liberty. Thank you very much for your time.

Not a single republican voted to restore Habeas, and this is supposed to be the party that wants to protect us from government intrusion and over reaching?

No, I'm just disgusted. I need more information. Was there something else in there specifically that they were objecting to?

Several did vote in favor of invoking cloture (ending debate so the bill could actually be voted on) but it wasn't enough to get to the 60 votes needed to get pretty much anything done in the Senate.

The Republicans voting in favor of ending debate were: Hagel, Lugar, Smith, Specter, Snowe and Sununu.

This must truly be the GOP's core values, if only a handful could vote to protect the constitution. They can no longer be doing this simply to protect Mr. 29% approval rating.

The constitution is darned inconvenient to some people/groups ambitions. but then it was desinged to be that way for good reasons :)

USC do you remember the days when Bush voters could be counted on to defend warrantless wiretapping, suspension of habeus corpus, the Iraq war, etc? I'm hearing nothing but crickets now. ;)
