I couldn't imagine satellite being slower, except for games and stuff like that (being on satellite, it will obviously have a lag). But for straight browsing the delay in upload shouldn't matter.

Uploads are painful on satellite and the 2 second delay can wreak havoc with many programs.

The ISDN is actually faster than almost all satellite internet. It depends on what bandwidth you get.

I get about 128K downloads on my ISDN, on my Satellite I was lucky to hit 45K.

Ahh your provider offers bonded channels then, not mine...

But the 2 way satellite is not so bad.

I remember playing games on satellite and getting about an 800 ms lag. Which is 20 times more than DSL. So that's about a 1 second lag, right? Maybe the "two way satellite" thing is different?

Don't you have to pay like 40 dollars a month for bonded channel ISDN? I get high-speed DSL for 35 dollars a month. Like I said, the numbers for ISDN just aren't that great.

But why does dial-up go so slow? They advertise 56K downloads, but I NEVER got above 3K a second, which would be a joke to me now.

Well, I recently switched to DSL (just offered) and pay about $20 a month for the equivalent of my $35 ISDN line.

We are one of the least wired of the developed countries.
Out in the sticks we are still waiting. the technology is there to get DSL to me but the phone co will not spend the money. They have the fiber to the repeater hut but will not install the line cards for it...

My "high-speed DSL" goes at 128K. I can get downloads as high as 180 KBPS, but that's not what they advertised. It's because I'm so far away from the thing. Freakin liers.

Nope still has the lag but it is much faster upstream. The lag is why VPN will not work.

$35 for ISDN ? wow I pay $70 plus various taxes. It is not regulated so they can charge what they want and don't have to allow resalers to sell it. No competition.
A new cell type tower is going up soon within sigfht of my house, checking on wireless net access.

US, you pay 70 dollars for ISDN? That IS a feat. I'm not sure I could find a line that sold for 70 dollars a month if I tried. :D

It's not regulated over here either. But if they charge 70 dollars for ISDN up in kentucky I'm sure the main effect would be that there would be no ISDN lines in kentucky.
 
AND you only get 64 KBPS?

Are you certain they don't offer cable in your area?

I honestly can't see why ISDN costs so much more than cable and DSL.

That is pretty much the case, I have one of two in my county. But to work from home it is the best I can get.
Dialup is just too slow when I have to download 27 meg programs every few days....Heck takes an hour with ISDN.
And at $70 it is still far cheaper than renting an office in town and driving back and forth.
When my ISDN circuit needs repair the phone co has to get someone from about 125 miles away to fix it.
And ISDN modems are not so very easy to find either....
I don't think regular tel line protertors protect ISDN very well, I go thru about 2 modems every summer. I unplug the line from my modem if I am around when it storms. but it still gets me.I need to put mu scope on it and see what the voltage levels are on ISDN and put some movs or Gas discharge tubes accross the pair.

Damo do you know what voltages are on the ISDN line ? My Oscope is broken....

So, it's just a distance thing? Too bad they don't offer real broadband. I only get it because I'm besides a highway. I wouldn't doubt that they don't protect the lines very well, but that's mainly because there's so few people using them.

Is 64 KBPS ISDN really that much faster than 56 KBPS dial-up?

You could probably even get another phoneline and a dual-modem setup for that amount of money, which may actually be faster.

Also 56K is not 56K. it''s true mak is something like 51K. Anything higher and it causes crosstalk in the cable pairs. I forget the exact upper limit.
also if you are on a digital carrier system for your phone service you can only get about 36K.

Yeah, US. You're going to need at least one anyway. So you'd be paying an extra 40 bucks over ISDN. Then add 10-20 for the ISP and you'd be paying about 50-60 dollars and it'd be faster and more reliable than what you have now.

If you're on a digital carrier system than you'd only be getting 72 KBPS, though... not much faster than ISDN.

yeah I can't even get one locally to accept bonded ISDN connections. That is why I am limited to 64K instead of 128K. 128K would be fine.

The lot of you twits are missing the point entirely. It's not about letting the performers know they did a good job: that's silly. Cheering/booing/applauding in a movie theatre is about the shared emotional experience.

We stand and applaud Michael Moore when he rips Dubya a new one not because we feel like he will magically feel our approval but because we want to share our contempt for the illegitimate son of a Barbara. It's a collective thing, a purely emotional thing.
