Has Ted Nugent been Dixie Chicked?

Its the difference between GOVERNMENT restricting speech and society influencing it. One is against the constitution, the other is not. And I assumed you were just making the shiite up about death threats.

The Chicks got death threats. And you said that was just people "exercising free speech."

The secret service was w/in their rights to talk to Nugent - his comments were a veiled death threat, by any measure.

Last, I have never suggested, nor would I suggest, that people don't have a right to boycott the Dixie Chicks. I just think it's kind of cowardly & unAmerican in spirit - that's my opinion, which I'm expressing.

Has the Liberal Media Gigant "clear channel" banned Ted Nugent from there stations yet?

I know! We even got a new verb/adjective out of the deal. And a GREAT Chicks album; I loved the song they wrote about it.

I always thought that what they said was pretty innocuous, too, especially compared to the Nuge here. But Bush's crazies really dug in after Iraq...if you didn't agree with Bush, you were a traitor. Period.

"un-American", "traitorous", "cheese-eating surrender monkeys", "terrorists", etc. It really opened my eyes to how nutty conservatives could get.

You mean people exercising their freedom of speech. As opposed to sending in the Secret Service to interrogate the suspect.

The comments are not equivalent.

TN: “If Barack Obama becomes the next president in November, again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year.”

DC: "we don't want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States (George W. Bush) is from Texas".

I was going to post on this thread the other day when I first read it but I was home for the weekend and could only post on my phone. Too much typing for that little keyboard.

I didn't know anyone even listened to Ted Nugent's music anymore...and can't understand why they ever did. Does he even make CD's or do radio stations play his songs? All I know about him is that I do like his hunting shows. He's well over the top on many of his views IMO. I can't imagine anyone who disagrees with his political view actually still listening to his music.

Here's what he said -- "We need to ride into that battlefield and chop their heads off in November." He also said he would be "dead or in jail by this time next year" if Obama is re-elected.

He said this to a group of likely like-minded folks in the middle of America (St. Louis) who are probably going to be actively engaged in the election process in November. Basically to a bunch of people who are going to support Romney anyway and many of whom probably feel the same sort of desperation to defeat Obama. Yes, there are people who feel that strongly about elections. Like the world is going to come to an end if the wrong guy is elected.

When you are a public figure, words have consequences...especially words spoken in support/ridicule of political figures. Ol' Ted will get what's coming to him and it already has started. Cancelled from an Army concert, interview with the Secret Service, etc. There will be consequences and he'll deal with them. But the 50% or so that support his side of politics will stay with him.

Back in 2003 Natalie Maines said -- "Just so you know, we're on the good side with y'all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas."

She said it to a crowd of mostly like-minded individuals in Europe right after war had started. I only say this to emphasize the feelings of many in the country. Once again, words spoken by public figures have consequences. Their fan base likely were about 85 - 15 against the sentiment she showed. As a result, boycotts (which are OK by me) ensued. Death threats are beyond the pale and those are for another discussion.

What followed was interesting. Bush said in an interview with Tom Brokaw -- "The Dixie Chicks are free to speak their mind. They can say what they want to say ... they shouldn't have their feelings hurt just because some people don't want to buy their records when they speak out ... Freedom is a two-way street ... I don't really care what the Dixie Chicks said. I want to do what I think is right for the American people, and if some singers or Hollywood stars feel like speaking out, that's fine. That's the great thing about America. It stands in stark contrast to Iraq ..." (I agree with this by the way)

In an EW article it was reported -- After watching this footage, Maines then repeats the president's comment and says, ''What a dumb f---.'' She then looks into the camera, as if addressing Bush himself, and reiterates, ''You're a dumb f---.''

Now any fans in the country music realm that saw this, if they hadn't developed disdain for the Dixie Chicks by then.... well let's just say that something like this alienates their fan base even further.

So, the Dixie Chicks did the smart thing. They targeted the 50% of the nation who agreed with them, tweaked thier music a bit and are still successful. My point of all of this is that if you don't want people to cancel you or boycott you (Nugent or Maines) don't say such degrading, divisive stuff about someone 50% of the country likes (or dislikes) because that's likely going to leave you to make your living off of the other 50% of the nation. What has happened in both situations is not surprising to me. If you watch Nugent or have read about him what he said in pretty normal of they way he expresses things. Again, over the top, IMO. But not threatening to Obama. The SS followed up and deemed things to be good. Life goes on. The Dixie Chicks had the largest mountain to climb because of the point they were at in thier careers...but they did it. This is America and the opportunity for success is still pretty good no matter your political lean.

LR, I agree w/ some of what you said. In general, it's fine that people who disagreed w/ the Chicks stopped buying their records on an individual level (though I have to say, it's not my personal philosophy - I could care less what that politics of an artist are. If I enjoy their music or their movies or whatever, I'm likely to keep buying it unless their views are particularly hateful or something along those lines).

I feel differently about the boycotts that were organized, as well as some of the other speech that was used against them. It ultimately had a chilling effect on speech in general. Other artists spoke of not wanting to be "Dixie Chicked," and in gerneral, it had the effect of shutting people up for fear of retribution.

If you disagree w/ an idea, counter it w/ one of your own. Get in the arena - win out by the strength of your conviction. Just shutting people up? Kind of sad, and something that does not add to the marketplace of ideas, imo.

I agree and well said.

I do kind of lean towards/away from certain artists if certain things are known about them. I cringe when I see Clooney or Baldwin stuff and almost never watch it. But then in music, I'm the same way with Toby Keith....especially lately. It does depend on the individual consumer.

Boycotts that were organized online by private citizens or that were instigated by radio stations in conserative areas of the country weren't a big deal to me. To me it was more of the little guy trying to make the big guy aware that there are a lot of folks who disagree with them.

I agree but .... to me the boycotts were more of a way the little guy (fans) could voice their opinons (counter ideas) and have them heard. I can have all of the conviction that I want (and I do) but if I don't have the audience who's going to hear. Whereas someone who is a performer, and a popular performer at that, is taking advantage of their venue, which they have every right to do, to make their opinions known. But be warned of the consequences. That's the way I see the boycotts...the little guy (fans with no audience) using something very public to kind of gather an audience.

I know we had this discussion back when all the Dixie Chicks thing was happening. I seem to remember on the subject of the boycott we just agreed to disagree.

The death threats, that was another story altogether.

Precisely. Well stated.

We do disagree on that, and we have discussed it before. I have had the "boycott" chat with quite a few on here; I'm aware that my feelings on them in general are not held by that many.

It was the whole Bush era, freedom of speech was greatly limited.

Oh please.

"Americans need to watch what they say" Ari Fleisher.

Imagine if Obama's press spokesperson said that! STY's guns would all fire spontaneously and he would most likely no longer be with us!

You are hilarious today. I am enjoying this immensely!

I am in an excellent mood today. First of all, I bought several pairs of gorgeous sandals over the weekend that I can't wait to wear. I got a pedicure and am all ready, unfortunately we are having a very chilly day today. But it will get warm again in a day or two. I had an awesome weekend, and I am really looking forward to a bunch of things this week starting with tonight. I also picked up two new customers since Friday. I'm on fire.
